An "Abnormal" (奇行種 Kikō-shu?) was an uncommon type of Pure Titan which could possess unusual intelligence or perform unpredictable actions.
Description
Unlike the typical Titan which attacked and devoured humans on sight, Abnormal Titans may have chosen to ignore lone or isolated humans and exhibited unpredictable behavior; often resulting in them causing larger damage as they disrupted important strategic locations. Some of these uncommon behaviors were speed-walking or running, performing great jumps, directly killing their victims before eating, and even speaking human language.[1] Abnormal Titans, like its Pure counterparts, resembled nude humans. They were bipedal though a few were quadrupedal, with the limbs and features one would expect in humans; however, they were all variously deformed to some extent in body proportions (enlarged head, small limbs, etc). Abnormal's had a masculine body type lacking all reproductive organs and in some specific cases resembled the Colossal Titan.
Story
History
The earliest known Abnormal's were the Wall Titan's that were created by the 145th King Karl Fritz in year 743, they were commanded into hardening into three concentric Walls outside of Paradis Island.[2]
The Fall of Shiganshina arc
During the Fall of Wall Maria, An abnormal Smiling Titan breaches through the Walls and headed straight for the Jaeger family's house. It was spotted by Eren Jaeger and Mikasa Ackermann who attempted to rescue his mother stuck underneath the rubble, Hannes initially attempts to kill the Titan before hes struck by fear, opting to take Eren and Mikasa to safety, leaving Eren's mother behind. Afterward, Eren witnesses the Titan pull his mother out of the debris, as it proceeds to crush her and devour her shortly thereafter.[3]
Ilse's Notebook: Notes from a Scout Regiment Member
During the 49th expedition outside the Walls, Hange Zoë among other members of Levi's squad encounter an Abnormal Titan that, after chasing Hange, suddenly turns around and heads back into the forest. Hange follows it deep into the forest and it stops within a field. After a brief delay, it begins banging its head on a tree within the center of the field. Hange and company get off their horses and tries to ask it what is its purpose is but is interrupted when it swings at them. After using their omni-directional mobility gear to escape to a tree, they again come down to the ground and try to talk to it before Oruo attempts to kill it. When Hange pleas him to stop he becomes distracted and is captured and almost eaten before Levi appears and cuts off its arm and then kills it. After Levi expresses his outrage towards Hange's incompetence for her teammates' safety, Petra shockingly points out a decapitated corpse hidden within a hole in the tree. They then find a lost diary on the ground that belonged to Ilse Langnar before her death.
Hange reads the diary. It explains that after Ilse's entire flank was massacred, she fled to a nearby forest, heading north. After profuse running, she inadvertently runs into a Titan and writes in the diary, believing it to be her end. She remarks that instead of immediately eating her, it hesitates. It then addresses her, saying "Ymir's people" and "Ymir-sama," greeting her with deep respect, and bows. She is thoroughly confused that the Titan can form speech, and writes in her diary that she has attempted communication. She first questions it about what the Titans are, and building up blind sadness, fear and rage, she angrily yells why Titans eat humans and what their objective is. The Titan appears more and more frustrated as it moans and tears at its cheeks, ripping off flesh and spraying blood. Ilse attempts to flee but is caught by the Titan, who is rapidly crushing her skull, and Ilse writes down her last few notes about the experience before being decapitated, while the Titan seemingly cries. The Titan later stores her corpse in the tree. Nothing is known about the Titan's motive and actions, but Ilse's notes prove significantly useful to humanity.[4]
The Struggle for Trost arc
After the breach caused by the Colossal Titan and subsequent invasion of Shiganshina District, a horde of Titans entered through the destroyed gate.[3] They are notable for entering the district almost immediately after the breach, and it is theorized by Armin that they were somehow lured in.[5]
As Eren Jaeger's group was heading towards the middle guard in the Trost District, an Abnormal Titan jumped out of nowhere and grabbed Thomas Wagner in its mouth. The rest of the group looked on, horrified, as the Titan swallowed him whole.[6] The same Titan would later appear, where it would be killed by Eren in his Titan form.[7]
Another Abnormal Titan appeared and charged straight towards the rear exit of Trost, where a group of citizens were gathered and trying to escape. It ran so fast that the elite guards stationed in that area could not keep up with it. Mikasa Ackermann appeared and sliced the nape of its neck to kill it, dulling her blades in the process.[8]
The 57th Exterior Scouting Mission arc
The Scout Regiment went on its expedition outside Wall Rose and on the way, an Abnormal suddenly appeared towards the right flank. It completely ignored the soldiers at the outer guard and charged straight towards the center of the formation. Armin Arlelt watched as Luke Cis and Dieter Ness attempted to kill it, cutting the tendons of its foot and making it fall, and successfully killing it. There is also a crawling Abnormal Titan which walks and runs on all fours and is capable of running at very high speeds. Its limbs are deformed giving it a spider-like gait and it is subdued by a team leader who leads it into a tree, knocking it unconscious.[5]
When Annie Leonhart attempted to escape the Scout Regiment by climbing the Walls, she damages part of the Wall, and a huge chunk is torn off, revealing the face of the Wall Titan.[9]
Clash of the Titans arc
Conny Springer encounters his mother's Titan form in Ragako village. Its arms and legs were shrunken and paralyzed, and it said: "welcome home."[1] It is later revealed that the Beast Titan is directly responsible for the humans-turned-Titans in the village.
When Miche Zacharius first encountered the Beast Titan, he believed it to be an Abnormal Titan due to the mass amount of fur on its body.[10]
After Eren and Ymir were kidnapped by Reiner and Bertholdt, they stopped by in the Titan Forest between Wall Rose and Wall Maria. As they were resting atop the branches, an Abnormal Titan was casually lying beneath them and appeared to be watching their every movement.[11]
Eren and Mikasa encounter the Smiling Titan after 5 years and witness it kill Hannes, before the same can be done to them Eren knowingly uses the Coordinate gaining control over the surrounding Titans. The ones that are under his control proceed to kill the Smiling Titan by ripping it to shreds and devouring it.[12]
Royal Government arc
After drinking the serum that turns a person into a Titan, Rod Reiss turned into a gargantuan Titan twice as big as the Colossal Titan. He was so big that he could only crawl and his body generated enough heat to burn nearby trees instantly.
This Titan turned out to be an Abnormal Titan and it headed to the Orvud District, the nearest and most populated area, attracted by the amount of people in the city.[13] It completely ignored the concentrated cannon fire against it and just kept going towards the city. It was later slain by Historia Reiss.[14]
War for Paradis arc
During the Surprise attack on Paradis Eren and Zeke gain full power of the Founding Titan and undoes all the hardening on the Walls initiating the Rumbling. After releasing the Wall Titans Eren declares to all the Subjects of Ymir he will annihilate all life outside of Paradis Island.[15] In the following days, Conny returns to his mother's Titan in Ragako village attempting to feed a jaw Titan inheritor to it, before he is stopped by Armin.[16] During the Battle of Heaven and Earth, Eren and the Wall Titans have slaughtered 80% of humanity before his Titan's are forced to a halt after Zeke is willingly killed by Levi, severing Eren's control over them. After Eren himself is killed by Mikasa, the power of the titans ceases to be and all Titan types including Abnormals are erased from existence, by proxy Conny's mother is reverted back to a human.[17]
Trivia
- The Nine Titans were considered to be Abnormal Titans, but are classified differently.
- There is no given reason nor explanation as to why or how Abnormals were formed, there appears to be no known correlation between any Abnormals in either Titan or human form that could explain their ability to remember certain skills or functions.
- It is possible that Abnormals remembered how to perform certain functions as seen with the "Talking Titan" and Conny's mother, as both were Abnormals capable of thought and speech, the correlation being that both Titans revealed this ability upon seeing someone important to them, with Conny's mother seeing him and welcoming him back home and the "Talking Titan" confusing Ilse Langnar for Ymir and proceeding to worship her before killing her after she attempted to flee.
