Attack on Titan: Short Stories (進撃の巨人 Short Stories Shingeki no Kyojin Short Stories?) is the first collection of short stories for the Attack on Titan manga, written by Hajime Isayama. The booklet was included in the special edition of volume 20.
The English version was exclusively included in the season 3 part 1 manga box set released by Kodansha USA in October 2018.
The stories were originally published on the "au Smart Pass" and "Sugotoku" apps.
Plot[]
SHELTER FROM THE RAIN[]
As the rain pours down in a walled-off world, the soldiers go about their daily lives, but are haunted by visions in the nighttime. What goes on in Levi's mind when the weight of the world lies on his shoulders? What words do Annie and Ymir exchange during training? This short story collection explores the fleeting moments between Eren, the 104th, and the Survey Corps.
Goodnight, Dear and Sweet Dreams[]
It was once said the dreams are a mirror of one's heart. Perhaps dreams are a respite that allow one to forget their cruel and brutal day, or they might be an abyss even harsher than reality… What will tonight's rest bring?
Summary[]
The booklet contains two stories: "Shelter from the Rain" (雨宿りの情景 Amayadori no Jōkei?) and "Goodnight, Dear and Sweet Dreams" (眠りと夢のはなし Nemuri to Yume no Hanashi?).
Shelter from the Rain[]
Vol. 01 Levi & Moblit Berner[]
Moblit attempts to take cover from the rain in a store after running errands, where, to his surprise, he finds Levi. Levi is there because Erwin summoned him to meet up with him.
Moblit wonders about Levi and Hange's relationship, which he is envious of. Levi laments that Hange is overly focused on something and states he respects Moblit's job as Hange's aide. He then encourages Moblit to have more confidence.
After the rain ends, Levi offers to help Moblit in carrying the grocery bags and head back to the barracks together.
Vol. 02 Jean Kirstein & Bertolt Hoover[]
Jean and Bertolt take shelter from the rain under a rock. Jean jokes about Bertolt's pose, but praises him and talks about joining the Military Police. However, Bertolt laments that he does not have a will of his own and wants to join the Military Police only everybody else does. Jean states that everybody would want to join the Military Police due to human nature and encourages Bertolt to be proud of himself. This kind gesture makes Bertolt appreciate Jean as a friend.
As the rain stops, Bertolt wonders if he is worthy of someone's trust. They soon traverse the forest with their ODM.
Vol. 03 Mike Zacharias & Gelgar[]
Mike and Gelgar are outside the Walls patrolling the Forest of Giant Trees. Mike soon notices that Gelgar is carrying alcohol because of his smell. Gelgar attempts to throw it away but Mike discourages him from doing so as he believes that alcohol represents Gelgar's bravery. Gelgar appreciates Mike for respecting him as a human being.
As the mist fades, they soon head out.
Vol. 04 Armin Arlert & Connie Springer[]
Armin and Connie soon take cover in a building during the rain. Connie looks at kids playing under the rain and Armin admits his jealousy for them since he has trouble making friends. He explains that he is shunned as a heretic for expressing interest on the outside of the Walls. Connie says that he was once teased for being an idiot and left outside his village, unable to find his way back until his mother saved him.
Armin felt glad he is friends with Eren and Mikasa, and Connie feels glad for his mom's love. They soon go out after the rain stops and Connie finds it funny how similar he and Armin are.
Vol. 05 Krista Lenz & Sasha Blouse[]
Krista heads to a nearby building when the rain starts and is shocked to find Sasha inside, eating food. Krista finds out that Sasha stole the food and she admits that rain makes her nervous. She explains that rain made hunting nearly impossible and caused her to not get food. Krista sympathizes with Sasha over the situation.
Krista later argues that soldiers get proper meal and suggests not to steal food anymore. She later offers her food to Krista and both of them run out back to the barracks under heavy rain.
Vol. 06 Nanaba & Hange Zoë[]
Nanaba is doing paperwork as an officer of the Survey Corps and notices Hange outside of the window. Nanaba is shocked to see an exhausted Hange walk without any rain gear. Nanaba expresses her disappointment that Hange is not a model squad leader.
Hange feels sad on being a high ranking officer in the Survey Corps, which was made possible by the deaths of their comrades. Nanaba consoles Hange that as veterans, they need to lead soldiers to prevent more deaths and explains that Hange needs to shape up.
Hange soon heads out in the rain to experiment on Titans, thinking about Nanaba's opinion on a veteran Survey Corps' soldier's duty.
Vol. 07 Petra Ral & Eld Jinn[]
As the rain falls down, Petra takes shelter in a nearby home. She meets Eld, who found himself in similar circumstances. Eld then teases Petra on her crush and Oluo. They soon discuss their placement in the Squad Levi as other than Petra, the others had not been partnered with Levi beforehand. They believe he chose them for their hidden strength and they are glad for fighting with Levi.
They also cannot wait for the new kid they will be training with and head out as the rain subsides.
Vol. 08 Reiner Braun & Marco Bott[]
During an exercise, the rain comes down and Reiner's team takes shelter in a nearby house where they find Marco. Marco believs that he and Reiner chose the shortest route too. Marco praises Reiner's command skills and consideration for his teammates, which embarasses Reiner.
Reiner praises Marco back for his leadership but Marco doubts it as he feels like he is too sacrificial and admires Reiner for his strength, which makes Reiner feel secretly guilty.
Their teammates call for them and both Reiner and Marco continue their competition.
Vol. 09 Dot Pixis & Rico Brzenska[]
Rico is going through a rainy day to take shelter under a rooftop to find her commander Pixis at the same spot. He wonders if she wants to observe the city; she has reports on Trost's economy status.
Since she fought in the Battle for Trost, Pixis asks Rico about the inhabitants which she believes took peace for granted and were unprepared for a crisis. Pixis suggests that soldiers are to make sure that peace is taken for granted. She thinks back and agrees with the commander before teasing him and leaving under the rain.
Vol. 10 Ymir & Annie Leonhart[]
The rain comes down and Ymir finds a place to shelter, where she finds Annie. Ymir is surprised that Annie is slacking, to which the latter responds that hand-to-hand combat does not factor how many trainees did not put effort into it. Ymir teases Annie for training Eren as he attempts to challenge Mikasa. Annie explains that she trained him so that he could leave her alone.
Ymir observes Annie and believes she is not as cold as it may look like. She believes Annie is a kind person that thinks of everybody as humans. They soon see their instructor coming and quickly escape the premise.
Vol. 11 Erwin Smith[]
Erwin is returning to the barracks after a party and takes shelter on a nearby roof. He soon hears the cries of the past and wants to be drenched in the rain.
The rain reminds him about how it negatively impacts the operations and forces to sacrifice many of his soldiers. He soon hears the voices of dead soldiers. He treats his soldiers as his family but believes he did not deserve their trust as he sacrificed them, which made him isolated from his comrades.
He soon encounters Hange, Levi and Mike, who were searching Erwin for the officer meeting. He appreciates the bond he made with Levi, Hange and Mike but feels guilty that he may have to sacrifice them.
Vol. 12 Eren Yeager & The 104th Training Corps[]
The rain impede the training march and made the trainees made camp. Eren is disappointed that the rain stop their tracks. They soon set campfire as the trainees start to have small talk. Armin offer Eren some bread and Eren noticed that he haven't experienced a lively environment.
Eren thought back, he didn't mix with other children until he became a soldier where he was never alone. Eren appreciate his newfound friends and wonder about his future fight against the Titans.
Goodnight, Dear and Sweet Dreams[]
Vol. 01 Sasha Blouse[]
In the morning, Sasha is grumbling in her sleep about food which annoys Ymir. Ymir tries to wake Sasha up only to find her dream talking which shocked the girls.
Few hours before sleep, the recruits take dinner only to find potatoes stolen by Sasha. Jean scold Sasha while Connie suggest that she must be a Titan past life which she denies.
Soon, she dream herself as a Titan which shocked many of her friends and run fo their lives. She suddendly have an urge to eat and begin chasing the recruits. She got Krista who begged Sasha not eat her, after Sasha saw Krista's face, she soon struggle not to eat.
She wake up only to find the girls staring at her. She explain her dream which Sasha claim that she doesn't want to eat her friends. Soon, the morning bell ring and Sasha thinking what's for breakfast.
Vol. 02 Levi[]
Levi stood in front of a door in the dark night. He dismount his horse and open the door and find Erwin who is familiar yet looked different.
It reminded Levi before the expedition as he saw the MPs. He and Hange talked about joining the MPs with the mention that Erwin and Hange was part of the top 10. Hange dismissed being the MPs as they dislike the rich life of hanging out nobles, wear fancy clothes and expensive luxuries but imagine Erwin as one.
Back in the dream, Erwin is wearing rich clothes invite Levi into an estate. Levi notice a red carpet and immediately disliked it. The he saw all of his Survey Corps comrades dressed in expensive clothes, which disgust Levi who knew he was in a dream. Soon, Hange claimed "it is better than this" and later the carpet turn into a sea of blood and all of his comrades bleed.
Levi soon wake up in the castle they are camping. As Petra bring Levi water, he wonder his comrades' decision to join the Survey Corps instead of a safe and peaceful life. Instead he vow to protect them and defend their decision. He wonder it was determination or he act tough to shake the horrible dream. In the end, he would not know.
Vol. 03 Bertolt Hoover[]
In nighttime before sleeping after training, Jean ask whether Bertolt have any dreams. Bertolt answered that he had normal dreams.
He dreamed being a bird, flying free and soaring through the air. with no chains attaching him. Bertolt wish no one would bother him forever. However, a man is holding a weapon ready to aim at the bird, claiming this “You have no right to celebrate such freedom.” Soon the bird is shot and fell to the ground.
As usual, the boys uses Bertolt's posture to predict the weather as Bertolt wakes up. In the end, Bertolt suffer himself while forcing a smile.
Vol. 04 Armin Arlert[]
Armin was struggling to get up and tried to look up to find he is not in the training grounds.
Back in dinner, Armin wasn't in appetite and Eren is next to him. Armin explain he was disappointed as there are no records of the terrain Eren and Armin read when they are children. Jean dismiss the idea of their world which anger Eren before defuse by Reiner. Eren soon encourage Armin on finding the desire scenery.
In Armin's dream, Armin was in a snowfield of sands and he realize that he was in a dream due to his exhaustion and recent topic. Suddenly, there is a form appeared from the heat and stretched its hand to Armin. As Armin stood, all he can see is the vast land of sand and wide blue sky which amazes Armin.
Armin soon wake up and Eren state that Armin was happy in his sleep. He soon thought of his dream and determine to achieve it. Soon he decide to do his best in training for his dream.
Vol. 05 Hange Zoe[]
Hange woke up from their nap by Moblit after their exhaustions with the Titan experiments in the afternoons. They revealed that they had a dream.
In the dream, the Titans can talk and Hange is experimenting with Titans by feeding the Titans with various food which the Titan showed no interest. The titan soon begged Hange to save them.
Soon, Hange continue the food experiment with Levi supporting them, using a stewed pumpkin. As usual, the Titan ignored the food and go straight to Hange. Soon they daydream the Titan speaking before snap out by their assistant. Hange went to rest on the request of Moblit, they soon ask Levi about Titan wanting to eat human which he replied that is Hange job. Before heading for rest, Hange thought of the dream and wish for understanding between humans and Titans.
Vol. 06 Marco Bott[]
In his dream, Marco dreamed being the MPs along with Jean marching with the King's parade.
Before that, the boys were discussing about the King's parade with Armin mentioning the small disputes on foods which the parade meant to distract. Eren claimed that the problems go away if they exterminate the Titans and console Marco that he can become an MP and protect the king.
Back in the dream, during the parade, he heard an orphan crying and rumors of the true nature of the Operation to Reclaim Wall Maria. Soon the scene gets blurry and the MPs and king were nowhere to be seen. He was asked by Eren who was wearing the Survey Corps symbol that he should protect other people than the King. Marco asked himself: Who is it…that I should be protecting …?!
He soon wake up and questioned his desire to become a MP.
Vol. 07 Annie Leonhart[]
Annie and Hitch went around Stohess to shop and Annie is annoyed of Hitch shopping habits. Soon Hitch lament to buy an expensive dress and wish to in love with an handsome arsitocrat. This made Annie thought of her whether she had moments with her 104th comrades.
In Annie's dream, she saw her 104th mates shopping in Stohess and felt happy seeing them. However, the mention of her Warrior friends soon drown the happiness, and told herself "I don’t have any right to smile." Soon, the 104th dissappear and Annie apologizes.
Soon Hitch wake Annie up and ready for the day. Annie tries to deny that she is the person in the dream.
Vol. 08 Jean Kirstein[]
In Jean dream, he had a conversation with Marco waking him up in the middle of the night.
He and Marco were talking about the close call back in Trost. Marco compliment Jean capability in Trost. Soon, Jean encourage Marco to become an MP as he realized that he was having a dream and soon to disappear.
Jean wakes up in the world where Marco is dead and felt sad that his best friend is still dead. Soon he felt determined is to chose what he need to do from now on.
Vol. 09 Moblit Berner[]
Moblit and Hange were talking about their Titan experiment before going to sleep.
Moblit thought that his squad leader get themselves trouble as he went for bed. He have a dream where Hange got to close to a Titan with her head into a Titan mouth. He woke up from his dream and worried that it might be a prophecy.
He later hurried himself to see Hange close to a Titan, he managed to convince them to start the test tomorrow instead. He drag his superior to bed.
Vol. 10 Mikasa Ackerman[]
Sasha ask Mikasa that she doesn't smile and attempt to get her smile only to be dissuade by Annie. Mikasa soon thought that she rarely smile and thought the last time she smile.
She dream herself as a child when her parents is alive along with the Jaeger family, celebrating dinner. She was happy her family is here.
The girls soon saw her dreaming happily and curious what Mikasa was dreaming, soon the sun wipe away the blissful fantasy.
Vol. 11 Connie Springer[]
Letters soon come to the recruits from their family and Eren is doing the delivery. While Jean attempt to ignore his parents' letter, Connie embrace it with sincere joy. Eren ask Connie about the number of letters Connie received and explained that his mother recognize he is a genius and supported him. When Connie mentioned he receive good marks, she happily write him a letter. Jean later insult which conflict Eren before defused by Marco.
In Connie's dream, he returned to Ragako to find it empty. He find his own home empty and open the back door to find a Titan.
This wake Connie and the others up. Connie soon thought of the horrible dream and determined to protect his village when he become MP. Soon he shed a tear in his sleep, whether out of fear or determination.
Vol. 12 Reiner Braun[]
As the recruits finished their training, they noticed the Garrison troops headed for a drink. They soon talk about the pub and alcohol later in the barracks and wish to have a drink like the Garrison and MPs.
In Reiner's dream, the recruits are drinking and being drunk fun. Something Reiner enjoys and blurt his Titan secret. He soon find Bertolt grabbing his arm and claim they can't turn and it isn't something to drink
Soon, Reiner wake up late at night, disturbing Bertholdt. He soon thought of his dream where can't imagine a future without his 104th friends. He attempt to shake these feelings before going to sleep.
Vol. 13 Carla Yeager[]
It was night time, Carla and Mikasa help to treat Eren injuries from his fight with the bullies before going to sleep. Before going to sleep, she is worried about Eren's condition especially the time where he killed the robbers. Grisha soon calm Carla down about Eren and not to worry.
She is in a dream where Eren and Mikasa had grown up and have a good life. Soon, Eren and Mikasa leave toward outside where a bright light shine where Carla couldn't reach with her thoughts, …Please don’t go.
She woke up from her dream and knew that her children would leave her, but at the very least, she wish to say a proper goodbye and a better future for her children.
Vol. 14 Ymir[]
Ymir hated having dreams due to having a nightmare once so she attempted to sleep early to avoid them and avoid any activities that tires her. However, one night in their camping training, she slept late due to her previous activity of finding Krista who got lost in chasing the runaway horse.
In her dream, she was in a complete darkness with screams that blanketed the area. Soon, she felt sick and lonely, then a mysterious voice comforted Ymir and turned into bright light. Ymir tries to grabbed it but the light faded away. She then promised to the voice that she is going to protect them and have a great life.
Krista then wake Ymir up who thought Ymir have a fever, she soon reassure Krista and remind herself to live a great future.
Vol. 15 Eren Yeager[]
It was when Eren recently joined the Survey Corps, Hange ask Eren whether he have any dreams. His common dreams was remembering the fall of Wall Maria where he felt powerless to save his mom. He admit dreaming that he want to save his mom through the ODM gear. He also dream about training and the most where he kill all of the Titans and freely explore the world. This end the interview with Hange conclude he doesn't have a violent nature that the MPs saying.
In his dream, he was exploring the world without Titans or anyone who looked at him dangerous. He felt like he is in an adventure but a voice told him there is one Titan left which shocked Eren. Then he saw his own Attack Titan approach him and Eren is left shocked. The Attack Titan quote this “You, too, must disappear, from, this world.” before killing Eren with its fist.
Eren woke up in fear where he worry he is the same as the Titans. Soon Petra call Eren about his 104th friends meeting him. He imagine his friends along with his seniors and felt his relationships made him feel human. Soon he start leaving the basement.
