"That day, the human race remembered the terror of being dominated by them, and the shame of being held captive in a birdcage..." — Over 100 years ago, a natural predator of humanity appeared: the Titans, giant humanoid but mindless monsters whose sole purpose of existence seemed to be to devour humans. There was an insurmountable gap in power between them and mankind, and as a result, humanity was rapidly exterminated to the brink of extinction. The survivors responded by constructing three concentric walls: Wall Maria, Wall Rose and Wall Sina, which graced them with a century of peace. However, one day a Colossal Titan far larger than any other seen before breached the outer wall, allowing the smaller Titans to invade the human territory and forcing the survivors to retreat to the inner walls. Eren Jaeger, a boy whose mother was eaten during the invasion, vowed to wipe every last Titan off the face of the Earth, and joined the military determined to exact his revenge.
Dhalis Zachary (ダリス・ザックレー Darisu Zakkurē?) was the premier of the three regiments (三兵団総統 San Heidan Sōtō?, also translated as "Commander-in-Chief of the Three Regiments") of the military: the Scout Regiment, the Garrison Regiment, and the Military Police Regiment.
Zachary first appears when he arrives at the court place when Eren Jaeger is put on trial. At the courtroom, he confirms who Eren is and then announces that the sole right of judgment rests with himself. Eren will either survive and go with the Scout Regiment, or he will go the Military Police Regiment and be killed.
Zeke Yeager (ジーク・イェーガー Jīku Yēgā?) was the former Captain (戦士長 Senshi-chō?) of Marley's Warrior Unit, assigned to take the Founding Titan from the Eldians of Paradis Island. He was the inheritor of the Beast Titan, and was considered to be the strongest warrior by Reiner Braun, contrasting Levi Ackerman's title of "humanity's strongest soldier."
Five years after the start of the Paradis Island Operation, Zeke travels with Pieck and a small number of Marleyan soldiers to Paradis Island to infiltrate the Walls. After arriving, the group locates a small village inside of Wall Rose, and chooses to turn its residents into Titans. The soldiers releases a gas laced with Zeke's spinal fluid into the air, which is blown into the village and inhaled by the villagers. Zeke then lets out a scream, triggering all the affected Eldians to begin transforming into Titans. As Zeke proceeds farther into Wall Rose in his Titan form, he is spotted by Mike Zacharias, who instantly notes the strangeness of his characteristics and mistakes him for a regular abnormal. As Mike's horse races back to him, Zeke notices it and throws it at Mike, preventing the latter from escaping and causing him to lose his footing and fall into the mouth of one of Zeke's Titans.
Gabi Braun and Falco Grice escape prison and take refuge with the Braus family, who accept them as a pair of runaways. Kaya, one of the orphans who lives and works with them, is aware that the two are actually from Marley and takes them to where her mother was killed by a Titan four years ago. She asks them what her mother had done to deserve such a gruesome death, and is unable to accept Gabi's rhetoric about needing to pay for the sins of Eldians committed long ago. Falco explains that her mother was a victim of circumstance during an earlier mission and after coming to terms with that, Kaya offers to take them to meet a Marleyan at the restaurant the Braus family is going to, in hopes of finding a way to get Gabi and Falco home.
Elsewhere, Hange Zoë is forced to deal with insubordination when Floch Forster and three other members of the Scout Regiment are caught leaking information about Eren Jaeger's imprisonment. In Marley, the military has realized that Zeke Jaeger has faked his death and likely sided with Paradis Island. Rather than wait six months for a global offensive, Reiner Braun suggests they make a surprise attack before Zeke can come up with a defensive plan.
Zeke Yeager and Armin Arlert converse in the Paths about the nature of life and how in her fear, Ymir Fritz managed to escape to a world without death. Zeke does not believe escape is possible, and that it is pointless since to live also means to eventually die. However, Armin speaks about personal moments that are precious to him, even if they are not in the service of continuing their species, and Zeke realizes that he has moments like those that he cherishes as well. This leads to them meeting several previous Titan inheritors who had passed away before them and they chose to connect with those they are closest to before requesting their help.
In the outside world, some of the Titans change sides, with Bertolt Hoover, Ymir, and the Galliard brothers' Titans moving to protect Reiner Braun and Annie Leonhart. Mikasa Ackerman catches up with the Beast Titan that had eaten Armin, and with help from Gabi Braun, manages to cut him free. Jean Kirstein grabs the detonator and triggers the explosives to blow off the Founding Titan's head and Reiner tackles the centipede-like spine that emerges, trying to reconnect with it. Falco Grice picks up most of the team on his flying Jaw Titan save for Reiner and Armin, and clears the area so Armin is free to transform into the Colossus Titan and destroy the Founder's body.
