— Levi to the last remaining merchant

Bad Boy[1] (悪童 Akudō?) is the third special chapter of the Attack on Titan manga, written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. It was included at the beginning of the 35th volume.

Overview[]

In the past, in the Underground, a young Levi tried to sneak into a mercantile carriage to retrieve a tea set that belonged to his mother but was pawned off by the brothel's owner after her death to be sold on the surface. After he was caught and apprehended by the merchants, they toyed with the idea of selling him as well. When he reacted violently, he was beaten within an inch of his life and this triggered his awakening. After Levi brutally killed all the others, the last merchant reluctantly gave back what Levi came for. He then tried to persuade Levi that he should be spared so that he could convince his other associates not to retaliate, but Levi was unconvinced it would be necessary and so proceeded to kill him as well. Some time later, after Kenny abandoned him, Levi went back to his mother's room and prepared tea for himself. As he was about to take the first sip from his mother's teacup, its handle broke, dooming the teacup to crash on the ground. In the present, Levi is telling this story to Gabi Braun to explain why he holds cups without touching the handle, prompted by her ridiculing him for it a moment before. She apologizes and vows that from now on she too will hold cups the same way, much to Falco Grice's annoyance.

Summary[]

In Levi's flashback, he remembers his mother's gracefulness in his rotten hometown - the Underground. Levi wants to retrieve a tea set that belonged to his mother. He sneaked into a carriage that was being brought up to the surface, where the tea set was, but got caught by the merchants who were driving the carriage. They began to beat him up, which led to Levi almost dying. The merchants recognized him as a kid Kenny was looking after. In fear of Kenny murdering them, they planned to feed Levi to the pigs, which they claimed it was not their first time doing. This event triggered Levi's Ackerman awakening. He ripped off one of the merchants' face, suddenly "knowing exactly what to do". He killed the other merchants and took back what he came for. After Levi was left by Kenny, he went back to his mother's room in the brothel and made himself tea with the tea set. Before taking a sip, the handle broke and the cup fell to the floor, crashing to pieces. In the present, after telling this story to Gabi Braun of why he holds his cup around the rim and not the handle, Gabi starts apologizing for mocking him before and says that she will also hold the cup the same way as him, much to Falco Grice's annoyance.

Trivia[]

  • On October 30, 2023, six months before release, Kodansha published the rough drafts of the first four pages of this chapter.[1]
  • There seems to be an inconsistency in the number of merchants: on page 3, when the group is first introduced in its entirety, six are depicted, but for the remainder of the chapter only five appear.
  • On page 9, despite Levi ripping off a chunk of a merchant's face from the upper teeth to the eyes the previous page, his upper teeth are still on his disfigured face.
