Berg Newspapers (ベルク新聞社 Beruku Shinbun Sha?) is a publication business in Stohess District. The business played a crucial role in the liberation of the Survey Corps during the coup d'état.
Purpose
The Berg Newspapers were responsible for the compilation and distribution of information approved by the Royal Government for the public. While they mainly distribute newspapers to the people of the Walls, they also deal in other forms of information, such as wanted posters.[1]
Until the overthrowing of the Royal Government, the newspaper was required to publish only information that supported the motives of the government, regardless of the truth or lack thereof. Those who would not uphold this obligation would be taken away by the Royal Government.[2]
History
According to Roy, the chief journalist of the Berg Newspapers at the time of the Survey Corps' uprising, one of his colleagues disappeared after he attempted to investigate an event in which a miner disappeared after attempting to dig beneath the Walls. Neither the miner nor Roy's colleague were ever seen again.[2]
Story
Royal Government arc
After Kenny Ackerman and the Anti-Personnel Control Squad battles with the Survey Corps in Stohess District, Roy and Peaure receive the story from Military Police Brigade Commander Nile Dok for publication. Peaure begins to take notes on the presence of the Interior Squad, but Roy stops him, assuring Nile that the Berg Newspaper will publish only the government-approved story.[3]
The next day, Peaure and Roy express their shared distaste for the propaganda they are required to publish. They are at this time visited by Hange Zoë, Squad Leader in the Survey Corps, along with their assistant Moblit Berner. Hange acknowledges their situation, but requests for them to publish the truth just once, sharing with them a plan to save the reputation of the Survey Corps.[4]
The next day, when the Interior Squad is tricked into publicly revealing their true nature and motives, the Berg Newspaper is there to record, publish, and distribute to the rest of the nation.[5] This information quickly reaches Mitras,[6] and thanks to their efforts the Survey Corps are cleared of their false allegations and return to their old prominence.[7]
Return to Shiganshina arc
When the government takes the decision to publicly reveal the information they learned from Grisha Yeager's books, the Berg Newspapers participate. Roy and Peaure later meet Hange, who has become the commander of the Survey Corps, and Levi Ackerman. They discuss the recently revealed information, the reactions within the people, and Roy's worries for the future.[8]
