Levi (リヴァイ Rivai?) is a former thug from the Underground and close friend of Furlan Church and Isabel Magnolia. He was taken into the Survey Corps by Squad Leader Erwin Smith.

Appearance

Levi has short, straight black hair styled in an undercut, as well as narrow, intimidating dull blue eyes with dark circles under them and a deceptively youthful face. He is quite short, but his physique is well-developed in musculature from extensive vertical maneuvering equipment usage. He is usually either frowning or expressionless; that, plus his extremely calm demeanor, often makes it difficult for others to guess what he is thinking.

Personality

Levi usually has a calm and cold demeanor. Displays of power do not impress him[3] and he is able to stay level headed even when he faces unplanned issues.[4] He is also an impolite and blunt person who does not hesitate to threaten people who annoy him[5] or insult anyone who looks down on him.[6] Levi is also very strict when it comes to cleaning.

Though he acts coldhearted towards most, his friends Furlan and Isabel are very important to him. He is always seen with them, trust their skills and is willing to keep them from danger.[7] When they passed away, he felt guilty and furious, willing to kill Erwin, who he held responsible for their deaths.[8]

Story

Attack on Titan: No Regrets

Levi, Furlan, and Isabel sit in an open underground sewer system admiring the birds in the sky above. After some time gazing, the trio leave to return to the Undeground.

The trio walks confidently past a group of intimidating thugs when Levi bumps into one. When the man pulls out a gun, Levi shoots past using vertical maneuvering equipment and knocks a barrel into the man, which wipes him out clean. The civilians watch in awe, and Levi's performance manages to catch the eye of Squad Leader Erwin Smith from the Survey Corps.[9]

Levi notices he is being followed

Levi realizes his group is being chased

Levi is with Isabel and Furlan in the underground, using their vertical maneuvering equipment, when the group notices that they are being followed,[10] and assume that they are Military Policemen. As the trio continue, Levi says that their pursuers may not be Military Policemen. Levi recognizes the Wings of Freedom on their backs, notifying him that these people are not the Military Police, but the Survey Corps.[11] Levi tells Isabel and Furlan that it will not be easy to lose them, but not to get caught.[12]

Levi quickly zips through the buildings of the underground using his vertical maneuvering equipment. Thinking he has lost them, he stops to walk, before Mike Zacharias slams into him from behind. After throwing him to the ground, Levi begins his escape, but Erwin comes and cuts the cord of his vertical maneuvering equipment.[13] Levi quickly gets up, pulls out a knife, and attacks Erwin. Before Levi does anything else, Mike stops him and tells him to look around. Levi looks to see that both Isabel and Furlan have been caught as well.[14]

Levi agrees to join the Survey Corps

Erwin comments on how the trio have amazing vertical maneuvering skills, and questions them on where they learned to use the gear, where they got their hands on it, and if they have had any military training. After getting no responses, Mike grabs Levi's head and slams it into a puddle. Erwin asks for his name, and he reluctantly tells him his name is Levi.[15] Erwin tells the trio that they can either join the Survey Corps, or be turned in to the Military Police. Levi pauses before reluctantly agreeing to join the Survey Corps.[16]

The trio arrive at the Survey Corps Headquarters, and Levi tells Furlan that he does not actually plan on enlisting, but simply wants to get closer to Erwin so he can wait for an opening to kill him.[17] Furlan tells him that it is pointless to kill Erwin, and that Levi needs to trust him on that.

Later, Isabel and Furlan find Levi sitting out on the roof of headquarters. The two join him, and they all admire the sky together. Furlan asks Levi if it is as beautiful as it was where he used to live, and Levi says maybe. Levi then tells Furlan that he has decided to trust him, and not kill Erwin for now, to which Furlan responds with a smile.[18]

Later, when the trio are asked to introduce themselves, Levi simply states his first name, earning looks of disbelief from the rest of the Survey Corps members.[19]

Levi, Isabel, and Furlan clean

Levi tells his friends to start cleaning

Flagon takes Levi, Isabel, and Furlan to the men's barracks, and Levi immediately notices how dirty it is. Levi confronts Flagon for telling them that though they came from trash, they have to keep the place clean. Furlan pulls Levi back and quickly apologizes.[20] Once Flagon is gone, Levi tells Furlan that even though they did not end up in Erwin's squad, he will still follow his plan, but will definitely kill Erwin. However, Levi tells them that they first have to clean the place.[21]

At the training yard, Flagon tells Levi that he is holding the blades incorrectly. Levi retorts that all that matters is for them to slice the Titans' necks, so he can do it in whichever way he pleases.[22] As they are training, the other soldiers are impressed by Levi's skill.

As the Survey Corps exit the wall, Levi, Isabel, and Furlan see the outside world for the first time. Levi stares up at the sky in awe and says that it is not bad.[23] Furlan says that they should have completed the mission without having to go outside the Walls. Levi assures Furlan that he will take care of the Titans, but is reminded that fighting real Titans is nothing like training.[24]

Levi kills the abnormal

Levi finishes off a Titan

Shortly after watching two soldiers die at the hands of a Titan, Levi orders for Isabel and Furlan to help him kill it, though Flagon does not approve. Levi distracts the Titan as Isabel and Furlan take out its knees to immobilize it. The Titan falls to the ground, and Levi takes the opportunity to slice its nape and kill it.[25]

The Survey Corps arrive at an old abandoned castle to rest for the night. Levi, Isabel, and Furlan talk a bit about how they took down the Titan, before Levi asks Furlan if he really thinks Erwin brought the documents. Furlan tells Levi that he knows for sure Erwin has the documents, because he had searched Erwin's room and found nothing.[26]

Levi waits in a hallway as Isabel and Furlan search Erwin's bags for the papers.[27] Erwin finds him, and the two chat a bit. Erwin compliments him for taking down a Titan so easily, and Levi describes how he was able to do it. They are stopped when Isabel shows up and drags Levi away.[28] Upon learning that Isabel and Furlan failed to find the documents, he declares that Erwin must keep them with him at all times, meaning he will have to kill him.[29]

Levi meets Hange

Levi is approached by Hange

As the three talk, they are approached by an enthusiastic Hange Zoë. Hange tells them that their fight against the Titan was amazing, and wants to know how they did it. Levi tells Hange that they were all self taught, and it is not something they can teach others.[30]

After going over the formation with Flagon's squad, Levi and his friends discuss obtaining the documents.[31]

The next morning, the Survey Corps continue on their expedition, and Levi comments on how using signal flares is a brilliant idea.[32] A storm breaks out, and Levi tells Isabel and Furlan not to get separated.[33]

Levi spends some time contemplating what to do, before he declares that he will go find Erwin alone.[34] Levi says he is the most likely to survive on his own, so the others should stay behind with the rest of the squad. Isabel and Furlan do not like the idea, but Levi insists that they should trust him.[35] The two tell him to make sure he comes back alive, and he takes off.

Levi faces the four Titans

Levi faces four Titans

Levi is on his horse searching for Erwin. He finds a squad that has been wiped out by titans. Levi sees the footprints of multiple Titans, before realizing they are headed back towards his friends.[36] He forgets his mission to go after Erwin and follows the Titan's footprints. Levi's horse becomes unusable after tripping and falling, so he is forced to run. Levi is unable to make in time to save Isabel from being eaten.[37] Furlan is in danger as well, but once again Levi does not arrive quick enough to save him.[38] Levi slices open the Titan's stomach and pulls what is left of Furlan out, but he is already dead. Blind with rage, Levi ruthlessly kills the four remaining Titans in an instant.[39] Levi is horrified upon finding Isabel's decapitated head, and closes her eyes.

Levi stays with the Survey Corps

Levi chooses to stay and fight with the Survey Corps

Erwin finds Levi, and asks him if he was the one who took out all of the Titans by himself. Without responding, Levi attacks him. Erwin reveals that the documents he was after were fake, and that the real set of documents were already in the hands of Commander-In-Chief Zackly.[40] Levi yells that it was not worth throwing away Isabel and Furlan's lives. Angered that his friends died for this, Levi attacks Erwin once again, prepared to kill him, but Erwin stops the blade with his hand. Erwin reminds Levi that it was not his fault Isabel and Furlan died, it was the fault of the Titans. He tells him to stay and fight for the Survey Corps, and that humanity needs his skill, and Levi hesitantly agrees to stay and fight with the Survey Corps.[41]

Abilities

Levi stole vertical maneuvering equipment with Furlan and Isabel. They somehow trained themselves and used it on underground missions.

Relationships

  • Furlan Church - They were close friends when they lived below the capital. He was Levi's confidant when they lived in the Underground City.
  • Isabel Magnolia - They were close friends when they lived below the capital. She used to name him as her big brother. Her death was one of the reasons why Levi became a part so important of the Survey Corps.
