This article is about the location. For the 18th episode of the Attack on Titan anime, see Forest of Giant Trees: The 57th Exterior Scouting Mission, Part 2.

A Forest of Giant Trees (巨大樹の森 Kyodai-ju no Mori?) is comprised of tall trees (generally around 80 meters tall), which have enormous trunks, large branches, and can grow larger than most Titans. Due to their enormous sizes, humans can stay atop the upper branches of the trees and remain safe from Titans, which do not possess the intelligence to climb trees. They are used by the Scout Regiment for certain goals on expeditions. These forests are excellent places to use the omni-directional mobility gear, as there are many tall tree trunks and branches to which the steel cables can secure to, improving versatility and mobility although, in contrast, it is also a perfect place for Titans due to the large tree trunks concealing them and the denseness of the forests reducing visibility of incoming Titans.

Story Edit

The 57th Exterior Scouting Mission arc Edit

Female Titan chases Eren

The squad is chased by the Female Titan

During the 57th expedition to the lands beyond Wall Rose, the entirety of the Scout Regiment's outer right flank was wiped out, due to the Female Titan apparently leading an army of Titans. Commander Erwin, the leader of the expedition, signaled the center column to enter the pathway to the Titan Forest, located somewhere between Wall Maria and Wall Rose.[1]

The remaining units, who were not brutally killed by the Female Titan, were ordered to station themselves on the borders of the forest and stop any Titans that attempted to enter.[1] At the other end of the forest, as expected, the Female Titan followed the center column into the forest. She pursued Levi's squad in the forest, brutally killing the Scouts who attempted to kill her.[1][2]

Soon after, the Female Titan is lured and falls into Erwin's trap, and is held in the forest while protecting the back of her neck, with the Scouts' hopes of capturing the human inside.[2][3] She later cries for Titans surrounding the forest to eat her alive as to escape her temporary confinement.[3] After the whole of Levi's squad, with the exception of Eren and Levi himself, is brutally murdered by the Female Titan, Eren transforms to battle the Female Titan. After Eren is defeated and kidnapped, Levi and Mikasa attempt to attack the Female Titan and Levi successfully rescues him.

Clash of the Titans arc Edit

Eren wakes up captured with Ymir

Eren and Ymir are captured and taken to the forest

After kidnapping Eren and Ymir, Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover stop at a forest of giant trees to rest.[4] They stand in the tree's upper branches to escape the nearby Titans, arguing with their captives while waiting for nightfall. Meanwhile, the military ride for the forest,[5] proceeding under Hange Zoë's deduction that this is where the Warriors would rest.[4] When Reiner and Bertholdt spot the Scouts in the distance, they decide to escape using the trees.[6]

The 104th Cadet Corps group enter the forest and witness Ymir in her Titan form. After Conny tries to get Ymir to talk, Historia appears. Ymir then swallows her and, using the trees, escapes.[6]

Trivia Edit

  • There are several of these forests in the region between Walls Maria and Rose and they originally functioned as tourist spots.[1]
