Gabriele is a government official from Fuerth District who infiltrates the resistance in Quinta District. He is unusually young for his job, having gotten it through his family connections. Gabriele appears in the light novel Attack on Titan: The Harsh Mistress of the City, Part 2.

Appearance

Gabriele is a lanky man with a youthful appearance, causing others to believe that he is younger than his actual age of twenty years.[1] Despite his frame, he is fairly muscular, which Mathias Kramer attributes to Gabriele's time spent trying to survive in Titan-infested territory.[2]

Personality

Initially, Gabriele appears to be an inquisitive individual and a scrappy survivor. When he arrives at Quinta District, he is quick to ask questions and read between the lines when others do not volunteer answers.[3] He is also a good liar.[4] Gabriele joins the resistance because it "sounds fun."[5]

However, he turns out to be a duplicitous individual who had no intention of ever helping the resistance. Gabriele does not see any issue with Rita Iglehaut's autocratic rule since it keeps refugees away from Fuerth District, which does not want to take in any additional survivors. Aside from feigning loyalty to the resistance while acting as Rita's spy, Gabriele has no issue with taking more extreme measures, such as lethally poisoning Bernhardt.[6]

Story

Gabriele and other officials in Fuerth District are surprised when Jarratt shows up bearing news from Quinta District, which they thought had been destroyed when Wall Maria fell. Fuerth is running low on food, however, and is not in a position to help given the number of evacuees they have already taken in, so Gabriele and the others decide to detain Jarratt to prevent news from spreading about Quinta's survival. Gabriele is eventually dispatched to confirm whether or not Jarratt is telling the truth.[7]

Three months after Jarratt's arrival in Fuerth, Gabriele reaches the open territory outside Quinta District while avoiding Titans on horseback. His horse becomes injured though, leaving him without transportation, but by then he is close enough that he manages to spot Klaus and Nikki while they are performing the Night Harvest.[7]

Gabriele decides to openly approach them to find out why they and the other people with them are gathering food at night outside the safety of the Walls. He is initially confused when they ask him which team he is supposed to be on, but eventually convinces them that he is not a citizen of Quinta District. Gabriele offers them a cover story, saying that he has been on the run ever since the Titans attacked his village, and that he survives by scavenging abandoned homesteads.[8]

Realizing that Gabriele could be a valuable source of information about the state of things outside the Walls, one of the other men with Klaus and Nikki suggests taking him to "our guy" since it would be better than that woman getting a hold of him. After being briefed on the situation inside Quinta and how Rita Iglehaut chooses to rule it, Gabriele outwardly expresses sympathy for the town's situation. He recognizes that Klaus and his companions aim to do something about the current status quo and chooses to assist them.[9]

Gabriele is smuggled into the city with help from Klaus[10] and he follows his new companion to an inconspicuous bookstore that serves as the base of operations for the resistance. There he meets Mathias Kramer, the leader of the resistance.[11] When the resistance presses him for information, Gabriele does not offer anything of substance, but asks them for the reasoning behind their questions and why they do not explore the land outside of Quinta for themselves. From Mathias, he learns more about Rita and how she runs the city. He also learns that the resistance was behind sending Jarratt.[12]

Shortly thereafter, he accompanies Mathias outside Quinta District during a Night Harvest as part of the resistance's plan to rescue Bernhardt. The two of them sneak away from the rest of the harvest group and take cover in a fissure that Gabriele had previously hidden inside while avoiding Titans on his way to Quinta. There, they camp out until the following night when Bernhardt is expected to perform his own Night Harvest alone.[13]

Once it is dark, they sneak back to the harvest grounds, but the two of them are startled by the sudden appearance of an aberrant Titan that is active at night. Gabriele is unable to do anything to help since Mathias is the only one who is armed. Before it can kill them though, Bernhardt arrives and manages to save them.[14]
