Hizuru (ヒィズル Hizuru?) is a nation occupying a part of Asia (東洋 Tōyō?, lit. "East Sea")[2] and is the only nation in the world that tolerates Eldians. Struggling ever since the Great Titan War,[3] Hizuru allies itself with Paradis Island after hearing about a lost descendant from the Shogun clan and the reserves of iceburst stones on the island, hoping they would restore the nation to its former glory.[4]
History
Eldia and Hizuru as allies
Over a hundred years ago, Hizuru was allies with the Eldian Empire. A son from the Shogun clan (that would later become the Azumabito family) had a close relationship with the Fritz family. When King Karl Fritz moved the capital of Eldia to Paradis Island, that son was invited to stay. However, after the Great Titan War and the Eldian Empire's collapse, Hizuru's reputation was tarnished and has struggled since then. The son who stayed in the island later began the Asian clan inside the Walls.[5]
Story
Marley arc
Early in the Marley Mid-East War, Kiyomi Azumabito is invited by Zeke Yeager to join forces with the residents of Paradis. After some back and forth discussions, Zeke is able to convince Kiyomi that the nation would greatly benefit due to the presence of iceburst stone on the island and they formally agree to join forces. Hizuru then begins to help Paradis prepare for an assault on Marley at some point in the future.
In 852, Kiyomi visits Paradis Island as an ambassador for Hizuru. She meets Mikasa Ackerman, the descendant from the Shogun clan that had once held power in Hizuru. In a meeting, Kiyomi explains a method in which Hizuru would aid Paradis island in modernizing its infrastructure, although she inadvertently makes it clear that Hizuru is allying primarily for financial incentive.[6]
In 853, Hizuru refuses to help Paradis Island trade with other nations because they want to keep all of its resources for themselves.[7]
After the end of the war, Willy Tybur calls upon the leaders of other countries to join him for a festival in Liberio where he would announce his solution to the problem of Titans. Hizuru sends Kiyomi and several others to attend the event. At a gathering on the eve of the festival, she expresses sympathy towards the Subjects of Ymir, by covering up for a Warrior cadet spilling wine over her kimono. Kiyomi then departs, leaving the cadets in awe of her benevolence.[8]
War for Paradis arc
After the Raid on Liberio, Kiyomi visits Paradis with an observation unit to witness the Titans' rumbling and informs Darius Zackly the leaders of Hizuru have nothing but praise for the bravery shown by the nation of Eldia. Zackly thanks them while stating their victory would not be possible had it not been for the strong trust their nations have in one another.[9]
Trivia
- The name "Hizuru" (ヒィズル Hizuru?) is phonetically similar to "Hiizuru-kuni" (日出ずる国 Hiizuru-kuni?), a name for Japan which translates as "Land of the Rising Sun," referring to the nation's location in the far east of the early known world. In the context of Attack on Titan, this becomes ironic since the sun is said to rise in the west in this reality.[10]

It is clearly a phonetic reference to Japanese word 日出ずる, which is pronounced quite the same and means “Sunrise”. In reality, Japan is also referred as “Hiizuru-kuni” – “The country where the Sun rises.” But remember Isayama in one of his monthly Q&As said the Sun rises from the west in SnK universe because he wants to create a sense of mirrored world? It seems paradoxical that he would name a country in the East Sea as “Sunrise”.".
