During the 49th Expedition outside the Walls, Hange Zoë among other members of Levi's squad encounter a Deviant Type Titan that, after chasing Hange, turned the other direction and headed farther into the forest. Hange follows it to a forest clearing where it headbutts a tree and it is soon after killed by Levi after almost eating Oluo. Petra Ral points out a decapitated corpse hidden in a hole in the tree, and they find a hidden notebook that belonged to Ilse Langnar before her death.

Hange reads the notebook. It explains that after Ilse's entire flank was massacred, she fled to a nearby forest, heading north. After profuse running, she inadvertently runs into a Titan and writes in the notebook, believing it to be her end. She remarks that instead of immediately eating her, it hesitates. It then addresses her, saying "Ymir's people" and "Ymir-sama", greeting her with deep respect, and bows. She is thoroughly confused that the Titan can form speech, and writes in her notebook that she has attempted communication. She first questions it about what the Titans are, and building up blind sadness, fear and rage, she angrily yells why Titans eat humans and what their objective is, calling them useless lumps of meat that ought to disappear from the world. The Titan appears more and more frustrated as it moans and tears at its cheeks, ripping off flesh and spraying blood. Ilse attempts to flee but is caught by the Titan, who is rapidly crushing her skull, and Ilse writes down her last few notes about the experience before being decapitated. The Titan later stores her corpse in the tree. Nothing is known about the Titan's reasoning for its actions, but Ilse's notes prove significantly useful to humanity.

Ilse remembers her comrades death

Ilse remembers the horrors of her comrades death

During the 34th expedition outside the Walls, Ilse's entire flank is massacred and she is the only survivor. With her horse lost and her vertical maneuvering equipment broken, she abandons her equipment and flees afoot north to a nearby forest, trying to find a route to reach the Walls. Knowing that her chances to make it are very low, she takes out a notebook and begins writing her experiences in the hopes that they at least will be useful to humanity.

After profuse running, she inadvertently runs into a Titan, which chases her and corners her against a tree. However, instead of immediately eating her, the Titan hesitates and she questions if it is an abnormal. It then somehow starts talking, saying "a subject of Ymir" and "Lady Ymir...Well met," while bowing.[4]

Ilse encounters a Titan

She is thoroughly confused that the Titan can form speech, and questions it about what the Titans are and where they came from, writing every question and the Titan's reactions in the notebook.

However, the Titan does not respond, and instead moans and looks increasingly frustrated. She angrily yells at it asking why Titans eat humans and what their objective is; calling them useless lumps of flesh that should disappear from the world. The frustrated Titan begins to tear off its cheeks, ripping off flesh and squirt blood.[5]

Horrified, Ilse attempts to flee but is quickly caught by the Titan, and tries to push its mouth away from her head to no avail. The Titan bites off her head but does not eat her. After killing her, the Titan leaves her body on the ground and leaves.[6]

Return to Shiganshina arc

Later in the Battle of Shiganshina, as Erwin Smith begins to lament the dwindling hopes of his dream, Ilse stands among the many fallen Survey Corps comrades in Erwin's mind, wanting to know if their deaths had meaning.[7]
