Story
Ilse was first introduced in a side chapter: Side Story: Ilse's Notebook. She was the sole survivor of a Titan attack. Her horse was killed and her 3D Maneuver Gear was severely damaged to a point she couldn't use it anymore. She ran away on foot to the north. She then ran into a Titan who strangely looked at her and started bowing for her repeating Ymir's name with great respect, thinking Ilse was Ymir. After Ilse got angry at him the Titan noticed it's not Ymir and killed her. However, Ilse recorded her interaction with the Titan in a notebook, which is later found by Rivaille.

Quote1 I don't believe it. For the first time in human history...I communicated with a Titan. Quote2
— Ilse as she writes in her notebook[2]

Ilse Langnar (イルゼ・ラングナー Iruze Rangunā?) was a member of the Survey Corps. She was a participant of the 34th expedition beyond the Walls and was in charge of the left wing of the second brigade. She wrote very useful information about a talking Titan she encountered in a notebook that later aided Hange Zoë's research.

Appearance

Ilse was noted to have resembled Ymir in appearance. She had short black hair that was parted to the right side, lightly tanned skin, and light-colored eyes with a small patch of freckles below each one. She wore the standard Survey Corps uniform and cape with a gray shirt underneath.

Personality

Ilse appeared to be quite emotional, yet brave, trying to stand firm in moments of despair. She seemed to be a very devoted and smart soldier. She also cared about her family, seen during her last moments as she regretted not being able to give anything back to her parents. Ilse thought of herself as a proud member of the Survey Corps and was resolved to do whatever she could. Though she took what time she could to document any information she could obtain from the Talking Titan, she lost her level headed attitude when she brought up the subject of eating humans and began screaming at the cowering Titan before running away in fear when it reacts strangely.[3]

Ilse remembers her comrades death

Ilse remembers the horrors of her comrades death

During the 34th expedition outside the Walls, Ilse's entire flank is massacred and she is the only survivor. With her horse lost and her vertical maneuvering equipment broken, she abandons her equipment and flees afoot north to a nearby forest, trying to find a route to reach the Walls. Knowing that her chances to make it are very low, she takes out a notebook and begins writing her experiences in the hopes that they at least will be useful to humanity.

After profuse running, she inadvertently runs into a Titan, which chases her and corners her against a tree. However, instead of immediately eating her, the Titan hesitates and she questions if it is an abnormal. It then somehow starts talking, saying "a subject of Ymir" and "Lady Ymir...Well met," while bowing.[4]

Ilse encounters the Titan

Ilse encounters a Titan

She is thoroughly confused that the Titan can form speech, and questions it about what the Titans are and where they came from, writing every question and the Titan's reactions in the notebook.

However, the Titan does not respond, and instead moans and looks increasingly frustrated. She angrily yells at it asking why Titans eat humans and what their objective is; calling them useless lumps of flesh that should disappear from the world. The frustrated Titan begins to tear off its cheeks, ripping off flesh and squirt blood.[5]

Horrified, Ilse attempts to flee but is quickly caught by the Titan, and tries to push its mouth away from her head to no avail. The Titan bites off her head but does not eat her. After killing her, the Titan leaves her body on the ground and leaves.[6]

Return to Shiganshina arc

Later in the Battle of Shiganshina, as Erwin Smith begins to lament the dwindling hopes of his dream, Ilse stands among the many fallen Survey Corps comrades in Erwin's mind, wanting to know if their deaths had meaning.[7]
