Quote1 I can't believe it. For the first time ever, I, a human, spoke with a Titan? Quote2
— Ilse[1]

Ilse Langar (イルゼ・ラングナー Iruze Rangunā?) was a member of the Survey Corps. She was a participant of the 34th Expedition beyond the Walls and was in charge of the left wing of the second brigade. She wrote very useful information about her final moments in a notebook.

Appearance

Ilse was noted to have resembled Ymir in appearance. She had short black hair that was parted to the right side, dark skin, and gold colored eyes with a small patch of freckles below each one. She wore the standard Survey Corps uniform and cape with a grey shirt underneath.

Personality

She appeared to be quite emotional, yet brave, trying to stand firm in moments of despair. She seemed to be a very devoted and smart soldier. She also cared about her family, since during her last moments she regretted not being able to give anything back to her parents. She thought of herself as a proud member of the Survey Corps and was resolved to do whatever she could.

Story

During the 34th Expedition outside the Walls, Ilse's entire flank is massacred and she is the only survivor. With her horse lost and her Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear broken, she abandons her gear and flees

afoot north to a nearby forest, trying to find a route to reach the Walls. Knowing that her chances to make it are very low, she takes out a notebook and begins writing her experiences in the hopes that they at least will be useful to humanity.

After profuse running, she inadvertently runs into a Titan, which chases her and corners her against a tree. However, instead of immediately eating her, the Titan hesitates and she questions if it is an aberrant. It then somehow starts talking, saying "Ymir's people" and "Ymir-sama", greeting her with deep respect, and bowing.[2]

Ilse's death

She is thoroughly confused that the Titan can form speech, and questions it about what the Titans are and where they came from, writing every question and the Titan's reactions in the notebook.

However, the Titan does not respond, and instead moans and looks increasingly frustrated. She angrily yells at it asking why Titans eat humans and what their objective is; calling them useless lumps of flesh that should disappear from the world. The frustrated Titan begins to tear off its cheeks, ripping off flesh and spraying blood.[3]

Horrified, Ilse attempts to flee but is quickly caught by the Titan, and tries to push its mouth away from her head to no avail. The Titan bites off her head but does not eat her. After killing her, the Titan leaves her body on the ground and leaves.[4]

Legacy

One year later, Hange Zoë and Levi Ackerman find her body and notepad in the same field and identify her as Ilse due to her armband.[5]

Template:Non-Canon The Special Operations Squad encounter the Titan that killed Ilse. After chasing Hange, it turns the other direction and heads to the tree where it stored her corpse. The Titan almost eats Oluo but is soon killed by Levi, and only then the team notes Ilse's corpse and her notebook left on the ground.

Hange takes the notebook, and after reading Ilse's experiences, she believes that they are significantly useful to humanity.[1] Template:Non-Canon

Anime and Manga differences

  • Ilse Langnar's corpse

    Ilse's corpse in the tree

In the manga Ilse drops her note pad as soon as the Titan drops her, however in the anime she writes notes in eat even as the Titan begins to crush her skull and only drops it once she is dead. Her body is also placed in a tree rather than left on the ground.[1]
