Liberio (レベリオ Reberio?)[1] was a Marleyan city located on the northeastern part of the mainland that contained an internment zone (収容区 Shūyō-ku?), a designated area of land for Eldians on the mainland to live in. It was the hometown (故郷 Kokyō?) of many of the main characters of the story.

Liberio was a metropolis intersected by a large river. Similarly to many areas around the world, Liberio was racially segregated, with the Eldians living in an internment zone while the Marleyans lived in the larger part of the city.[1] A couple streets away from the internment zone was the Headquarters of the infamous Warrior Unit, one of the most important, if not the most important building in the entire city. Liberio also posessed a railway station, and a large industrial area bordering the internment zone.

The internment zone was separated from the rest of the town by a large circular wall that was higher than every building in the internment zone, guarded by Marley Public Security guards, who had the task of controlling and authorizing who went in and out of the zone.[2] Any Eldian that would dare to go beyond the walls without authorization faced severe punishment if caught.

As it is common in all nations beyond Paradis Island, the Eldians who lived in Liberio were subjected to various types of mistreatment. As members of a despised race, seen as "filthy" by Marley and the rest of the world, Liberio turned to be a very hostile environnement for the local Eldians who faced daily discrimination at the hands of the officers that guarded the internment zone and the Marleyan citizens who lived in the city proper. While the rest of the city was prosperous, the state of the roads and the buildings in the internment zone was in a much poorer state.

Whenever Eldians went beyond the internment zone, even if given the authorization by authorities, they would face constant harassment from the local Marleyan citizens, who would curse, spit, and throw objects at the Eldians in order to show their contempt and remind them of their pariah status in Marleyan society.

Towards the edge of the city was the sea with a harbor near the coast which was scorched during a raid by the Colossal Titan. That harbor was the Marleyan navy's primary naval base.[3]

History

Not much known about the town's history except it was known for the huge concentration of Eldians in the city.

Rather than be exterminated, the Marleyans offered "mercy" to the Eldians by forcing them to live in designated interment zones. However, its true intent was to store the Eldians to use the Founding Titan as weapons to conquer the world.

One small, yet significant event happened in Liberio in 817, when two Eldian kids, Grisha and Fay Jaeger wander out the internment zone without permission to see the airship. However, the kids were caught by the Public Security officers, Eren Kruger and Gross, the former issued corporal punishment to Grisha while the latter used Faye to feed her to his sons' dogs. This event traumatized Grisha which drove him to join the Eldian Restorationists once the truth was revealed to him.

In 830, Marley announced the Warrior program in which the Eldians were asked to offer their children to the government in order to become one of the seven Titans that Marley acquired, and in exchange, the Warriors and the families would receive "Honorary Marleyan" status. Liberio's is one of the many internment zones that received the call, and soon many Eldian children like Zeke were sent to the Warrior Program. In 832, Zeke told the Marley Public Security about the Eldian Restorationists, under the advice of Tom Xaver, which led to mass arrests of the conspirators and were turn into Pure Titans as punishment.

By 842, all of the Warrior candidates from Liberio inherited six of the seven Titans that Marley have. Both Eldians and Marleyans celebrated the Warriors' departure to Paradis Island to capture the Founding Titan in 845.

Liberio was usually referred to Reiner, Annie and Bertholdt's "hometown" when they mentioned their home. When infiltrating Paradis Island, they claimed that their hometown was located at the southeastern region of Wall Maria in order to falsify their identities.

Story

Humanity's Comeback arc

During their days spent in the 104th Cadet Corps, Reiner and Bertholdt claimed that their hometown lied in the southeastern mountainous region of Wall Maria and that their town had been overrun by Titans without warning during the fall of Wall Maria. Reiner in particular expressed a strong desire to return to his hometown in the future.[4]

Clash of the Titans arc

During the Wall Rose invasion when the Scout Regiment recruits battle the Titans at Utgard Castle, Reiner comes close to death by a Titan and fears for the end of his life before he is saved by Bertholdt. At this time he strengthens his will, filled with determination to return to his hometown. He shares his resolve with Bertholdt, who understands the true meaning of what Reiner says and agrees with his hopeful words.[5]

The next morning, when Reiner begins to lose hope for his situation due to an injury inflicted on his arm at Utgard, Bertholdt encourages him by reminding him of their imminent return to their hometown. Not long afterward, the two reveal their Titan identities as the Armored and Colossal Titans and attempt to capture Eren Jaeger, whom they must bring to their hometown.[6] They succeed in capturing him and escape to a Titan Forest.[7]

While in the Titan forest, Reiner reminds Bertholdt that their most favorable course of action is to return Eren, YmirChrista Lenz, and the "Coordinate" to their hometown in order for their mission to be complete. Reiner also suggests that Bertholdt should confess his true feelings to Annie upon their return, but Bertholdt denies any such affections. Later, when Reiner and Bertholdt attempt to escape with their captives Eren and Ymir, they inform the others that Eren's life is not up for negotiation and that he is going to be taken to their hometown. Armin taunts Bertholdt at the thought of leaving Annie behind, causing him to attempt an attack and exposing a vulnerable moment for Erwin Smith to free Eren.[8]

Ymir and the fleeing Warriors arrive in the ruins of Shiganshina District later that night, where Reiner lets Ymir know that her rescue is hopeless if they take her to their hometown. Ymir accepts her fate, believing that she owes Reiner and Bertholdt a favor for indirectly freeing her from her life as a Titan five years before.[9]

Return to Shiganshina arc

In the aftermath of the Battle of Shiganshina District, the surviving members of the Scout Regiment learn of the existence of Liberio and the rest of the outside world through Grisha Jaeger's autobiographical writings, kept hidden in the basement of his former home.[2]

Marley arc

Four years later, the nation of Marley is victorious against the Mid-East Allied Forces, and the Warriors and other Eldian forces return to Liberio by train, reuniting with their families inside the internment zone.[10]

Falco going to deliver a letter

The injured Eldian soldiers are also taken to the internment zone's hospital.[10] One of the current Warrior candidates, Falco Grice, meets a man named Kruger and grows to respect the soldier. He delivers numerous letters for Kruger to an unregulated postbox outside Liberio.[11]

The Tybur family visits Liberio so Willy Tybur, the head of the family, can see the statue of Helos at the military's headquarters. He also meets with Commander Theo Magath and takes him into his confidence. Sometime later, Willy invites representatives from the world's nations to a festival in Liberio's internment zone.

The festival is held, with numerous people setting up stalls in order to impress foreign visitors. The people of the internment zone also partake in the celebration over the course of the day. At night, crowds of civilians, army officials, and foreign ambassadors gather to hear Willy's speech. Before the curtain rises, Falco Grice asks for a moment of Reiner's time, and leads him to a basement where "Mister Kruger," now identifiable as Eren Jaeger, awaits.[11]

The curtain rises and Willy takes the stage, beginning his speech with a production recounting the history of the world, and the horrors of the Titans. In an interlude, the Warriors Pieck and Porco Galliard are summoned by a supposed Marleyan soldier, who later traps them in a confinement area.[12]

The Attack Titan crushes Willy

Willy concludes his speech and as he gives a declaration of war, Eren transforms into the Attack Titan, emerging from the building behind Willy and crushing the stage. This attack sends debris flying into the crowd and kills Willy.[12]

The Attack Titan begins a rampage, slaughtering key military personnel with little regard for collateral damage. The massacre sends pandemonium into the crowd, creating a human stampede as people rush to escape the area surrounding the stands.[13]

Having survived the collapsed stage, Lara Tybur praises her brother's legacy and transforms into the War Hammer Titan to battle the Attack Titan. Meanwhile, Pieck and Galliard escape their confinement area with help from the Cart Titan's Panzer Unit.[13]

The Scout Regiment begins their attack in earnest, shooting down the Marleyan infantry, as well as any armed Security Authorities in the area. A group of soldiers led by Floch Forster set fire to residential buildings. The Regiment blocks off roads and installs lights on top of buildings to direct their escape airship later.[13]

The ensuing conflict wrecks havoc in the vicinity, with the Warriors generally controlling the flow of battle. Inside the relative safety of a building, Magath calls in thirty thousand soldiers stationed nearby. He instructs them to seal off the internment zone to prevent the escape of the enemy soldiers.[13]

The Colossal Titan walks through the carnage of the transformation

In the nearby harbor, the navy forces summoned to Liberio prepare to dock their battleships. The transformation of Armin Arlelt into the Colossal Titan prevents this, destroying the harbor and ships and sending a shock-wave into the internment zone.[3]

The battle continues with a reversal of dominance by the Scout Regiment when they incapacitate most of the Warriors and even appear to kill Zeke Jaeger's Beast Titan. The Scouts successfully retreat on the airship following the lights previously set by Jean Kirschtein's squad, although Gabi and Falco manage to reel into the airship using a deceased Scout's ODM gear.[14]

War for Paradis arc

The next day, the Marleyan military is seen excavating the site for victims, which includes children. The hardened remains of the War Hammer Titan looms over the carnage. At the site of Zeke's "death", they can only find his limbs, suggesting that he faked his demise.[15]

Liberio is destroyed

Liberio is destroyed by the Rumbling

Some Eldians would desperately try to convince Liberio's guards to allow them to leave after receiving Eren's message announcing the Rumbling. Unfortunately, the guards do not believe the crowd, as only Eldians were able to see Eren's broadcast, and accuse them of plotting to escape their internment camps. The Eldians begin surrendering to the guards until Leonhart lashes out against them.[16]

The city would be destroyed altogether once the Rumbling arrived at the Marleyan mainland.[17]
