Nick, the Chair Craftsman (椅子職人ニック Isu Shokunin Nikku?) is the 22nd chapter of the 2nd volume and the 49th chapter overall of the Spoof on Titan manga, written and illustrated by hounori.
Overview
Hange convinces Nick that he is destined to be a chair craftsman.
Summary
Hange congratulates Nick on completing his first chair. Nick expresses his distaste for the trade, only for Hange to continue to interrupt him. Hange notices that the chair is defective while mentioning that the Survey Corps will be able to use Nick's future creations. Nick offers to repair the chair, but Hange refuses, stating that a big-hearted individual will appreciate the chair in its current state. Hange ends up giving the chair to Levi, who is far from impressed.
On a separate day, Hange asks Nick if he is building chairs again. Nick expresses his doubt for the trade. In a flashback, Hange has Nifa assist in randomly choosing a career for Nick. In the present, Hange nervously claims that the chair craftsman career was chosen for Nick by God. Hange then decides to offer Nick the opportunity to switch careers. Nick is enthusiastic, until Hange reveals the career as an envelope craftsman. Although hesitant, Nick agrees to change careers, mentioning how this new path will be easier on him. Later, Hange criticizes Nick's envelope as not being up to the standards of a veteran crafter.
Back to crafting chairs, Nick remarks that he wished that he could have his holy items. Hange reminds him that would jeopardize his false identity. Nick asks for a distraction from the hard work, and Hange offers him alcohol. This angers Nick, causing him to attack Hange.
Later Nick comments that he is starting to enjoy making chairs. Hange informs him that everyone loves his chairs, much to Nick's delight. Nick praises God and declares that his life now has purpose. Hange delivers one of Nick's newest chairs to Levi, who is displeased with the embedded titan carving. Hange responds that the chairman must have gotten carried away.
Hange overhears two Scouts discussing Nick's chairs. Hange confronts Nick, furious that he drew attention to himself. Nick apologizes, mentioning that he thought advertising his trade was for the best. Hange is genuinely surprised upon viewing Nick's latest work, causing Nick to proudly proclaim that he is a craftsman at heart. Hange then apologizes and tells Nick that he is now going to become a wooden plate craftsman. Hange then observes Nick struggle with his new task, offering commentary.
