Species

Just wanted to clarify my earlier edit; I think we should consider one of a human appearance to be a 'Human' until it's proven otherwise. In this case, of course, we may never get a proof, but he looks human and died to a Titan, which, in my opinion, wouldn't happen so easily if he was a Titan Shifter. Therefore, I suggest keeping his species as Human. There is nothing that suggests he is something else.  Miskos3 Talk  20:07, August 20, 2013 (UTC)

I think there's enough question to leave it unknown, since....well....we honestly do not know. I would disagree that his death proves he was human, since Reiner nearly died and the timing of the incident suggests he already possessed his powers. Beyond that, there is enough circumstantial evidence to suggest he may have been a Shifter, but it is unconfirmed at this time. He belonged to a group of characters that have, thus far, all been Shifters and died somewhere between the trio's homeland and Wall Maria, in the year it fell. The clothing worn by all three suggest they were traveling (heavy coats, large packs), which further suggests he was part of the mission. Beyond that, we have the connection between the timing of his death and Ymir's regaining her human form. All in all, it leaves many questions about who and what he was.

Hopefully, we'll get some more information soon.

I just thought that since he has a human appearance, not specifying him as a human till proven otherwise is kind of weird. But I don't mind waiting, hopefully there will be more about him.  Miskos3 Talk  20:52, August 20, 2013 (UTC)

I don't think so. The clothing could easily suggest "moving from one village to another" and we honestly have no proof that Reiner and Bertholdt even had a mission at that point. If we use the circumstances regarding "being around titan shifters" and "clothing they wear", then we could just as easily put Historia under unknown, considering we see far less of her and know much less of her part, especially with the Wall Reiss scandal and her connections with Ymir. Human until proven otherwise--after all, we wouldn't have changed Annie to "unknown" before we knew for certain it was her, no matter how much it looked like she was a titan shifter, right? And to be honest we know even more about Historia and Annie, two of the most mysterious characters in the series, than we do about Berik, who isn't really even a lot of matter at this point. You might be reading more into it than is necessary. Chris (talk) 20:55, August 20, 2013 (UTC)

Well, that's a good point. With such logic, we could no longer call any of the characters human anymore because we "aren't sure". So yea, I still propose keeping Berik as a human until we're told otherwise. Because we DO have a proof that he is one, his appearance, while only thing supporting the Titan Shifter theory is speculations, not solid facts.  Miskos3 Talk  21:06, August 20, 2013 (UTC)

I'm tilting my head a little concerning that stretch of logic, but if people think we should label him as human based solely on appearance then fine. I simply argue that there's an element of uncertainty concerning him, based upon what little facts we have to work with. I would argue someone from the Shifter Homeland, actively associated with known Shifters, running around outside the Walls in 845 dressed in travel gear with the infiltrators.....is someone that is an unknown because at this moment we don't know enough.

It is fair to assume someone from inside the Walls is human, as we know their population is primarily human. Eren is the only known Shifter from inside the Walls at this time. On the other hand, the only samples of the population we have from the "homeland" are Titan Shifters, so it is reasonable to question the species of someone from that same population since we do not know whether they are a mixed group (Humans and Shifters) or an entirely Shifter population.

Official English Name?

So Crunchyroll has a deal with Kodansha, will be simulpublishing new chapters. They have released chapters 46 - 50, which includes the chapter where we learn his name. In it, he is called "Berwick". From digging, it seems Berik is a variant of "Berwick", so it seems legit.

Crunchyroll is using Kodansha USA's translator, so it would seem that they count as official translations. As such, should we rename to reflect having an official English release? I know with other names, we were primarily using the official Funimation names from the anime releases. However, as a character that won't be appearing until we get a second season, the Kondasha USA release is our only source for an official name. Thoughts?

I'm wondering the same, but regarding chapter names. hfc2X 16:22, October 31, 2013 (UTC)

Since the namechange happened later on, i.e. it being Isayama's correction of his name, shouldn't his name be moved to "Marcel"? The translators didn't even have a chance to change it after all. NeoSuperior (talk) 02:32, December 8, 2013 (UTC)

Not till we see the Kodansha USA translation  Miskos3 Talk  11:12, December 8, 2013 (UTC)

2. reference

The second reference is pointing to wrong chapter: "The following morning, with no weapons and their superiors all dead, the rookies prepare for the end. However, Ymir reveals her secret and transforms into a Titan, fighting to save the others. Reiner and Bertolt were shocked once they realized that Ymir is the same Titan that attacked them years earlier and killed Marcl.
