Revision as of 13:33, 11 March 2018

This article is about a member of the Survey Corps. For the 104th Training Corps trainee, see Thomas Wagner.

Thomas (トーマ Tōma?) was a former member of the Survey Corps who was in Squad Mike. He brought the news of Wall Rose's breach to Commander Erwin.[2]

Appearance

Thomas was a well-built man of average height. He had dark semi-long hair parted in the middle with a dark goatee and mustache. He was commonly seen wearing the uniform of the Survey Corps with a white v-neck underneath.

Personality

Thomas was a trusted soldier, as he stood alongside other superiors such as Mike Zacharias and Nanaba. He was shown to be very strong, both physically and mentally as he pushed himself to travel on horseback for several hours in order to get the news of Wall Rose's breach to Commander Erwin as fast as possible, only taking a short minute long break in Ehrmich District to tell the citizens of the Titan invasion.[3]

Story

The Female Titan arc

Thomas is first seen when he barges into the hearing of Erwin Smith on the charges of the damage to Stohess District by Annie Leonhart, the Female Titan. He charges in and, much to everyone's shock, alerts them of Wall Rose's breach. It is shown that earlier he is seen alongside Mike Zacharias and Nanaba while they monitor members of the 104th Training Corps who are suspected to be accomplices of Annie. As they discuss the possibility of an ally to Annie being among them, Mike smells several Titans coming from the south side of Wall Rose and he quickly tells Thomas to alert the commanders.[4]

Thomas would later die under unknown circumstances, probably during the Wall Rose invasion.[5]

Trivia

  • Thomas is not seen again after Chapter 36 of the manga (chronologically, after delivering the news to Erwin in Chapter 34). However, during a Q&A and autograph signing in March 3rd, 2018, Isayama revealed that he died off-screen "in the middle of series":
Q: Is the fast horse, Thomas, doing fine after the annihilation of Mike's squad?
A: Thomas died in the middle of series. The Survey Corps only has 9 surviving members.
If Isayama's words were to be taken literally, and since the latest chapter released at the time had been Chapter 102, this would place Thomas' death around Chapter 51, around the end of the Wall Rose invasion.[5]
