Prehistory

Year Event
1003 B1 As a young girl, Ymir Fritz gains the power of the Titans from an unknown source, becoming the Founding Titan.[1] With her powers, she is able to turn her subjects into Pure Titans.[2]

The Fritz family comes into power as the royal bloodline of Eldia, destined to remain unbroken for the next 2,000 years.[3]

990 B1 For unknown reasons, Ymir Fritz dies 13 years after inheriting her power. Her "soul" is split between Nine Titans that are inherited by nine Subjects of Ymir, with the Founding Titan belonging to the Fritz family and the eight remaining Titans leading clans subservient to the Founding Titan.[1] Those who inherit the power of the Titans are destined to die after 13 years as Ymir did due to a phenomena called the "Curse of Ymir."[4]

The Nine Titans wage war against the nation of Marley, the dominant nation of the land, taking control of the continent and establishing the empire of Eldia.[1] Eldia conquers countless other civilizations as well using Pure Titans as cheap weapons of mass destruction.[5] This results in massive casualties and entire cultures being wiped out.[6]

Unknown Eventually, in-fighting breaks out between the various Eldian families for control over the eight Titans, but the Fritz family, using the power of the Founding Titan, maintains balance.[7]

The Ackerman family, "byproducts of Titan science"[8] and an Eldian bloodline unrelated to the Subjects of Ymir, becomes the sword and shield of the royal family, remaining close to the monarchy for generations.[9]

Eldia becomes allies with Hizuru.[10]

History

Year Event
Unknown - c. 743: The Great Titan War Karl Fritz, the 145th monarch of the Fritz family, inherits the Founding Titan and succeeds his predecessor as the monarch of Eldia. Ashamed of Eldia's history of genocide and civil war, Fritz conspires with the Tybur family, an Eldian house possessing the War Hammer Titan, to bring about Eldia's downfall.

The Tybur family fabricates the story of a Marleyan man named Helos to instigate the Eldian in-fighting and serve as a hero for the oppressed people of Marley.[11]

Karl Fritz gathers most of the Fritz royal family to Paradis Island, Eldia's last remaining undisputed territory,[12] and moves the capital to that island, abandoning the conflict between the eight other Titan houses. He also invites Asians from the Shogun clan of Hizuru.[13] Some Fritz royals disagree with the King's decision to abandon the war, and remain behind in the mainland.[14] In the King's absence, the other eight Houses wage civil war. The Great Titan War begins.[15][7]

The surviving Marleyans took advantage of this and incited a rebellion. The Tybur family is the first to side with the Marleyan uprising.[16]

Over the course of the war, the Marleyans succeed in gaining the power of six more of the Nine Titans possessed by Eldia: the Colossus Titan, the Armored Titan, the Female Titan, the Beast Titan, the Cart Titan, and the Jaw Titan.

Using the seven Titans, Marley gradually gains control of the continent.[15][17]

King Fritz uses the Founding Titan to create and order countless Colossus Titans to form the three concentric Walls—Maria, Rose, and Sheena—to protect the remnants of Eldia.[18]

c.743 In order to stop the war, King Fritz sends a false message to the people of Marley, demanding that the surviving Eldians must be left alone or the Colossus Titans will "flatten the entire Earth."[19]

The Great Titan War ends. The nation of Marley would retain control of a large portion of the world beyond Paradis Island throughout the next century, using the power of the Titans.[20] Hizuru's reputation is tarnished due to their association with Eldia.[21]

The Eldians who did not flee overseas would become low-class citizens of Marley, forced to live in internment zones separate from the rest of the population.[22]

After gaining control over the mainland, the Marley government promotes the story that Ymir Fritz had gained the Titan's power through a deal with the "Devil of All Earth," who was slain by their hero Helos during the war.[1][23][24]

King Fritz informs both the Fritz family in Marley and the Tybur family that he has made a vow renouncing war to the Founding Titan, and that there will be no retaliation if and when Marley chooses to enact a final solution against Eldia.[25] However, he asks that he and his people should be given a brief age of peace before their retribution.[26] [27]

The King uses the power of the Founding Titan to erase the memories of the Subjects of Ymir. The Subjects successfully forget their history, but minority groups not sharing the majority's common bloodline such as the Ackerman family and the Asian clan are unaffected by the mind wipe. Many of the minority groups swear to secrecy at the King's request and gain noble status,[28] but the Ackerman and Asian groups give up said status, turn against King Fritz, and are hunted down.[29]

For the safe-keeping of the Founding Titan, the royal family lives in hiding as the noble Reiss family while another bloodline takes the place of the Fritz family as a false monarchy.[30]

The 145th Fritz King, now the First Reiss King, creates an underground cavern where the Founding Titan can be passed down to successors within the royal family. Some time afterward, a chapel is built above the entrance to the cavern.[31]

743 According to the traditional history taught in Paradis Island, this is when the entire human race except for the inhabitants of the island was devoured by the Titans.[32]
Unknown The Titan Biology Research Society is founded in Marley. After researching the nature of the Titans and the Subjects of Ymir, they determine that the power of the Titans is carried across "paths" invisible to the eye, with all "paths" coordinating at the Founding Titan. The people of Marley name the Founding Titan the "Coordinate" of these paths.[33]

Plans are made for underground districts within the Walls, but these plans are eventually abandoned at the behest of the Church of the Walls.[34]

c.780 A homeless Eldian girl is given the name "Ymir" by the leader of a cult of Ymir Fritz. The girl joins the cult and becomes a figure of worship.[35]
c.785 The cult of Ymir is found by the Public Security Authorities of Marley. They are led through Marley in chains and are exiled to the borderline of Paradis Island[36][37] where they are all turned into Pure Titans.[38]

After hearing of Marley's plans through information from the Owl, Grisha urges Zeke to join the Warriors as a double agent.[59]

832 Zeke learns that the Public Security Authorities are coming close to finding the Eldia Restorationists.[21] At the age of seven, Zeke turns his parents in, gaining Marley's trust. Grisha and the Restorationists are arrested by the Public Security Authorities.[60]

After torturous interrogation at the hands of the Marleyans overseen by Officer Kruger, the Eldia Restorationists are sent to Paradis Island. Many of the Restorationists, including Dina Fritz, are turned into Pure Titans. Kruger turns against the Marleyans before Grisha was to be killed, revealing himself to be the Owl and an inheritor of one of the Nine Titans. In his Titan form, Kruger kills the soldiers of Marley.[61][62]

Kruger informs Grisha of his past, the nature of the Titan's power and the "Curse of Ymir," and his desire to see the Founding Titan retrieved from the Walls. Grisha reluctantly accepts the duty from Kruger, turning into a Titan and eating Kruger, inheriting the power of the Attack Titan. Grisha transforms for the first time and uses the Attack Titan to safely reach the Walls.[63][64]

Reiner tells Hange to pass a letter from Ymir to Historia, shortly before Zeke and Pieck arrive to rescue him.[236] The three Warriors flee Shiganshina district.[237]

Both Armin and Erwin are found to be alive but on the brink of death, creating a difficult choice as to who should be saved with the Titan serum held by Levi.[238] Ultimately it is decided by Levi that Armin will be given the serum. Armin, in his new Titan form, eats Bertolt Hoover, and Erwin Smith dies.[239]

Eren, Mikasa, Levi, and Hange investigate the basement of the Yeager household, where they discover three books left by Grisha detailing his past in Marley and his knowledge of the Eldian-Marleyan conflict.[240][241]

Time After The Battle Of Shiganshina Event
A Few Days Eren and Mikasa are detained for assaulting their superiors. In his dreams, Eren begins to see his father's memories of his arrival at Paradis Island and realizes that Dina was the Titan that killed his mother.[242]

Shortly after the return of the Survey Corps, Queen Historia arrives in Trost District and reads Ymir's letter. Eren and Mikasa are released from their imprisonment early with Commander-in-Chief Darius Zackly's approval, and a meeting is held to discuss the findings from the basement. Eren realizes a loophole in the First King's will involving touching a royal-blooded Titan as he did with Dina, but chooses not to speak of it out of concern for Historia's fate.[243][244] The meeting concludes with the decision to make the basement revelations public knowledge.[245]

The nine survivors of the battle of Shiganshina District are honored in ceremony by Queen Historia.[246]

Under A Year Upon the Warriors' return to Marley, the government postpones their mission to obtain the Founding Titan. When the loss of two Titans becomes publicly known, the Mid-East Allied Forces declare war on Marley.[247]

Near the end of the winter months, it is announced that Wall Maria has been made completely Titan-free. Due to the large influx of Titans over the course of five years, very few Titans remain beyond the Walls on Paradis Island.[248][249]

Year Event
Unknown Ymir is restrained and eaten by Porco Galliard, brother of Marcel, who inherits her Jaw Titan. He inherits Ymir's memories, but not Marcel's.[250]

Zeke Yeager meets with Kiyomi Azumabito in private, revealing his true allegiance to Eldia. They discuss plans for the revival of the Eldian empire.[251]

851 One year after the Battle of Trost, Eldian citizens begin to repopulate Shiganshina District. The Survey Corps sets out beyond Wall Maria for the first time in six years, reaching the borderline wall and the shores of the ocean.[252]

Marley sends out their first survey fleet to Paradis Island.[253] They are intercepted by the Survey Corps, who intern the soldiers present with the help of Eren and Armin's Titans. The Anti-Marleyan Volunteers on-board defect to the people of the Walls' side, giving them information about Marley and their technology, as well as Zeke's secret plan to save the Eldian people.[254] Other Marleyan soldiers are eventually convinced to lend their aid to Paradis Island.[255]

852 Kiyomi Azumabito of the nation of Hizuru visits the island of Paradis, with the intention of forming an alliance.[256]

Kiyomi reveals that Mikasa Ackerman is a long-lost descendant of the Azumabito clan, making her the equivalent of royalty in Hizuru.[257]

Kiyomi explains the three conditions needed to protect Paradis island from external invasion. Eren objects to the third condition of maintaining possession of a Titan with royal blood, as it is not only risky, but would mean sacrificing Historia's children for their own survival.[258]

853 A railway line is constructed on Paradis island.[259]
850-854:

Marley Mid-East War

Marley slowly gains control over the seas in its war with the Mid-East Allied Forces, though half of the outdated navy is lost through the course of the war.[260]

Meanwhile, the Allies develop anti-Titan artillery to gain a significant advantage on land conflicts.[261]

Over the course of three years, 32 scouting ships are sent from Marley to Paradis Island. None of the ships return.[262]

Marley's war with the Mid-East Allied Forces culminates at Fort Slava, a coastal fortress. While the Warriors under Marleyan command besiege the fort, Zeke uses his Beast Titan's power to drop parachuting Eldians over Fort Slava, turning them into Titans as an airstrike. Reiner's Armored Titan destroys most of the anti-Titan artillery present at Fort Slava, and the Beast Titan tosses artillery rounds at the nearby Mid-East fleet, destroying it. The result of this battle brings an end to the Marley Mid-East War.[263]

Time After the End of the Marley Mid-East War Event - Year 854
A Few Days The Mid-East Allied Forces sign a peace treaty with Marley, the victors of the four-year war.[264]

A meeting is convened afterward to discuss the global reaction to the Armored Titan's defeat, and Commander Theo Magath concludes that the technological progress of the world is rendering the power of the Titans obsolete. Zeke proposes that the Founding Titan must be reclaimed as soon as possible for Marley to gain full mastery of the Titans while Marley develops conventional weaponry to boost its outdated military.[265]

Some time after the conclusion of the war, the forces of Marley return to their homeland.[266]

A Few Days - One Month In order to restore Eldia's reputation in the eyes of the viewing world, the Tybur family offers their support to the Paradis Island Operation, vowing to deal with Paradis Island within one year.[267]

Eren Yeager infiltrates Marley using Eren Kruger's identity. He befriends Falco, whom he uses to help deliver letters to his allies.[268][269]

The Tybur family comes to Liberio to make preparations for an upcoming festival of world ambassadors. Willy Tybur meets with Magath, and together they conspire to rid Marley of its troublesome military elite to pave the way for Magath's rise into power.[270]

One Month Construction works for the festival begin, supervised by Willy Tybur.[271]
Time Event - Year 854
One Day Before The Battle of Liberio The night before the festival, Willy Tybur announces that his upcoming stage production will reveal his answer to the worldwide Titan threat.[272]
Year 854: The Battle of Liberio On the night of the festival, Falco brings Reiner Braun to meet with Eren, who is hiding in a basement behind the festival stage.[273]

Willy Tybur publicly reveals the truth of the Great Titan War and labels Eren Yeager, usurper of the Founding Titan, as the greatest threat to world peace.[274] When Willy Tybur declares war against Paradis Island, Eren transforms into the Attack Titan and kills him, before going on a rampage.[275]

The younger sister of Willy transforms into the War Hammer Titan and attacks Eren. When the Attack Titan is overpowered by the War Hammer, Mikasa Ackerman uses a barrage of Thunder Spears to bring the Titan down.[276] Eren discovers the War Hammer Titan's true body encased in a crystal below ground and seizes it, but is unable to break the crystal open.[277]

The Survey Corps, equipped with anti-personnel vertical maneuvering equipment enter the battle and engage the Marleyan soldiers. The Jaw, Cart, and Beast Titans join the expanding battle shortly after.[278]

During the ensuing conflict, the Survey Corps initially face difficulty against the Warriors, however, they gain the upper hand shortly after Armin Arlert uses his Colossus Titan to destroy a docking fleet.[279]

Levi neutralizes the Beast Titan, and the Cart Titan is defeated by an attack led by Jean.[280] The Jaw Titan fights aggressively against Eren, but is also defeated. Eren uses the Jaw Titan's powerful jaws to crack open the younger sister of Willy's crystal, inheriting the War Hammer Titan. Eren then prepares to eat the Jaw Titan, but is stopped by the Armored Titan, who rescues Galliard before collapsing.[281]

Eren and Mikasa reunites with Armin and the rest of the Survey Corps aboard their getaway airship.[282] Gabi and Falco also board the airship, where Gabi shoots and kills Sasha.[283] They are brought to Zeke Yeager aboard the airship, who is revealed to be on the side of the Paradis Island Eldians all along.[284] The Survey Corps proceed to make their escape from Liberio.[285]

Time After the End of the Battle of Liberio Event - Year 854
Unknown A funeral is held for the eight soldiers, including Sasha Blouse, who died during the Battle of Liberio.[286]

A Global Alliance Army is formed to prepare a retaliation against Paradis Island. They plan to conduct a scorched-earth operation in six months.[287]

Yelena and the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers pass the Titan serums that they stole from Marley to Dot Pixis, but laments being unable to procure the knowledge to create those serums.[288]

Eren Yeager is arrested and placed in an underground cell on account of his insubordination.[289]

Zeke Yeager is placed under house arrest in a Forest of Giant Trees, and kept under close scrutiny by Levi.[290] His Anti-Marleyan Volunteers are also placed under house arrest.[291]

Gabi and Falco escape custody of the Paradis military, fleeing into the wilderness, before coming into contact with the Blouse family.[292]

Historia Reiss is revealed to be several months pregnant, the father a laborer at her orphanage.[293]

Floch Forster and Survey Corps recruits loyal to Eren's cause leak the news of his arrest to the public, leading to protest and disarray. The Survey Corps has Floch's cell arrested.[294]

Yelena admits to Pixis that she had secretly met with Eren, legitimizing the Volunteers arrest.[295]

A group of Survey Corps recruits plant a bomb to assassinate Zackly, who was looking to have Eren eaten. The same day, Eren Yeager uses his Titan powers to escape his cell, and his followers are released by sympathetic jailers. Eren meets with Floch's group, and decides to find Zeke. The military initiate a full-scale search for Eren.[296]

Pieck successfully infiltrates the Walls once more.[297]

Pixis announces the plan to begin negotiations with the Yeagerists, putting Zackly's assassination aside.[298]

Hange discovers that Zeke's spinal fluid had been inside numerous wine bottles served by Marleyan workers to many in the military elite.[299]
