Quote1 I tried to find...my lost child in you. I tried to run away from my sins using the power of the Titans. How much better it would all have been...if I was never born into this world? Quote2
— Xaver expresses his regret[2]

Tom Xaver (トム・クサヴァー Tomu Kusavā?)[3] was an Eldian researcher and Warrior who held the power of the Beast Titan. He was the mentor and friend of Zeke Yeager.[4]

Appearance

Tom had short dark hair and a round face. He wore the traditional apparel of a Warrior and a red armband, showing that he was an Eldian and an honorary Marleyan. Tom also wore glasses identical to the ones Zeke Yeager would later wear as an adult.

Personality

Possessing an inquisitive mind, Tom was always curious about how the Titans came to be and mentioned to a young Zeke Yeager that he became a Titan researcher primarily because of it. Usually seen with a smile on his face, Tom was an easy-going man with a slight care-free attitude; he was also compassionate and comforted Zeke after the boy turned in his parents to the Marleyan authorities.

History

At some point in his adulthood, Xaver fell in love with a Marleyan woman. Knowing that it is forbidden for Eldians and Marleyans to marry, he purposefully hid his Eldian armband whenever he saw her and the two soon fell in love and married. After Xaver's wife gave birth to their son, she managed to discover his Eldian heritage and promptly killed both herself and their son in shame; Xaver discovered them shortly afterwards. Overcome with grief, Xaver joined the Warrior Unit as a form of suicide, eventually inheriting one of the Nine Titans, the Beast Titan. He also became a researcher in order to study the Titan Powers.

Near the end of his term, Xaver began observing the new batch of Warrior Candidates who would potentially inherit his Titan. He took particular notice of one lagging behind, and Instructor Magath informed him that the boy's name was Zeke Yeager. Although Magath did not respect the boy because of his poor performance, Xaver did not share his low opinion.

Xaver would eventually meet Zeke in person while playing catch by himself at the Warrior headquarters. After a bit of encouragement, he managed to convince Zeke to play with him, complimenting the boy for his pitching ability. Xaver would continue to bond with Zeke through their games, explaining during one game that he joined the Warriors in order to study the Titans and had no interest in the war potential that the Titans had.

One day, Xaver found Zeke crying in the alley where they usually played catch, and was horrified to learn that the boy's parents were leaders of the Eldia Restorationists movement. With the Marleyan authorities close to discovering the identities of the cell's leaders, Xaver suggested that Zeke turn in his parents before they were found out in order to prove his loyalty to Marley. Although Zeke was reluctant, Xaver convinced him by reminding him of all of the emotional turmoil the boy had faced as a result of the pressure his parents put on him.

When Zeke sided with the Public Security Authorities and exposed his parents Grisha and Dina as members of the Eldia Restorationists, Xaver was with Zeke and his grandparents as they were detained and taken away to Paradis.[5]

Xaver continued to play catch with Zeke as the boy progressed through the Warrior program. During one of their games, Xaver revealed to Zeke that he had discovered through his research that the Founding Titan had an ability to alter the composition of Eldians' bodies in addition to altering their memories. Zeke suggested that if that were true, the Founder could be used to sterilize all Eldians and eradicate the Eldian race within a few generations, prompting Xaver to tell Zeke about his own son's death. Zeke promised Xaver that he would inherit his Beast Titan and use it to take the Founder away from both Eldia and Marley, so that neither side would ever be able to misuse it again.[4]

Sometime around the year 845, Zeke began wearing glasses identical to Xaver's.[6]

Story

Unnamed final arc

After Zeke loses his glasses in a battle against Levi in the Titan Forest, he remembers his time with Xaver and then reminds himself that he has a mission to do. Having recalled their history together, Zeke screams for Xaver to watch him before detonating the Thunder Spear inside his stomach.[7]
