Quote1.png We gave Marley both freedom and power in hopes of atonement. But in the end, Eldia and Marley were thrown into darkness. The Tyburs are responsible for that. Quote2.png
— Willy Tybur on his family[1]

The Tybur family (タイバー家 Taibā-ke?) is a house of Eldian nobles living in Marley, however, in truth they are the nation's highest authority. Even though they are Eldian, they are highly respected throughout the world for being the first Eldian family to fight against Karl Fritz and fight to restore Marley in the Great Titan War. The family gave Marley freedom and power as an act of atonement for their ancestors' crimes.[2] Willy Tybur was the head of the family.

They kept the War Hammer Titan for generations, but only a select few knew of the previous inheritors identity.[1]

History

Karl Fritz conspires with the Tybur family

Before the Great Titan War, the Tybur family was one of several Eldian houses warring for control over the Nine Titans. By the time war had broken out between Eldia and the remnants of Marley, the Tybur family had possession of the War Hammer Titan. Opposed to the 145th King of the Fritz family, the Tybur family was the first of the Eldian houses to side with Marley in the war. With their aid, Marley gained the upper hand in the Great Titan War, acquiring the support of their Titan as well as that of the Colossal, Armor, Female, Beast, Jaw, and Cart Titans.

In the aftermath of Marley's victory in the war, the Tybur family was praised for their support in the early fighting, and for their service they were granted positions of high nobility as honorary Marleyans, permitted to live on luxurious estates whereas the remaining Eldian population was segregated into internment zones. The Tybur family would keep their high status in society for the next century, swearing loyalty to Marley. However, the Tybur family would not use their War Hammer Titan in conflicts with enemy nations during this century.[3]

It is later revealed that the family has done more than simply enjoy themselves for the last century and have been interacting with the upper-class men and women from around the world to improve the social standing of the Subjects of Ymir. However, Willy does admit the previous Tyburs were less vigilant about these duties in comparison to the current generation.[4]

For the Paradis Island Operation, the Warriors received intel from the Tybur family that the King of the Walls was bound to a "vow" to renounce war.[2]

At some point, Willy Tybur became head of the family, and at another, Lara Tybur inherited the power of the War Hammer Titan.[4]

Story

Marley arc

In the aftermath of the Marley Mid-East War, Zeke Jaeger grows concerned that the Eldian race has been put at risk with the world's growing technological advantage over the Titans. In order to gain the support of the viewing world for the next mission against Paradis Island, the Tybur family agrees to cooperate with the Warriors by holding a press conference in Liberio during an upcoming festival, where they plan to announce that the island of Paradis will be overtaken within one year.[3]

Later on, the family visit Liberio. During a meeting between Commander Magath and Willy Tybur, the latter reveals that his family controls the Marley government behind the curtain.

Willy is killed by Eren Jaeger

Willy holds his conference in the Liberio internment zone as planned. Despite secretly expecting a surprise attack from the forces of Paradis Island, Willy and Commander Magath proceed with their plans to bait an attack from their enemy. At his speech, Willy declares war on Paradis Island and is subsequently slain by Eren Jaeger's Attack Titan, who begins a rampage.[2]

Lara Tybur thanks her brother for his service to their family, then transforms into the War Hammer Titan to battle the Attack Titan.[4] After a prolonged conflict, and despite her initial advantage, Eren Jaeger defeats and devours Lara, thus signalling the loss of the War Hammer Titan from the Tybur family.[5]

Personal Guard

Tybur family's personal guards

The Tybur family employs an army of personal guards. In term of appearance, they wear elegant dress uniform consisting of a crimson red tunic and black cross-belts, completing with white trousers and a silver spiked helmet engraved with Marley's emblem. Each guardsman is armed with a rifle and a saber.

Guardsmen tasked to protect the family up close seem to be selected for their outstanding physique. When Magath and Koslow went to meet with Willy, they are brought in by a massive guardsman who is taller than the door frame.

The personal guard is first seen when Magath visits the Tybur family in the Warrior unit's headquarters in Liberio.[1]
