When Carly decided she wanted to run away, he let her live with him for several days and agreed to leave town with her. However, Wayne was not interested in living with Carly in poverty. Two thugs, Wald Richter and Lou Meade find Wayne while they are looking for Carly. Wayne decides to betray Carly and makes a deal with the two thugs to hold Carly for ransom. He planned on blackmailing Carly's father, Elliot G. Stratmann using Carly's involvement in the drug trade. The two thugs agreed and locked Carly up at Wald's office. They then met with Elliot and negotiated a handoff date.[3][4]

In the days leading up to the handoff, Wayne kept an eye on the Stratmann estate, when one day he noticed a Military Police officer, Annie Leonhart, visit the estate. Wayne became worried that if the Military Police investigated Elliot that he would be found out so he left a note for Elliot outside his door, telling Elliot to bring money to Wayne's house in exchange for his daughter back. Wayne then jumped over the gates of the estate and was spotted by Annie.[5]
